I don't want to start a new thread but Buck said they added Drake to the roster just because. They weren't worried about him signing elsewhere or going in the Rule 5 draft.

I understand rewarding a guy but it seems like a waste.

They don't do anything "just because." Buck's statements were intended to be a pat on the back for Drake, but I don't for one minute believe that they would have him on the 40-man if they were confident he would stay put and wouldn't get chosen in the Rule 5 draft if he were left off.

Earlier I said, while talking about Parmalee not being on the 40 man, "I hope Pearce doesn't throw his bat at the pitcher in game 1." I was joking, but I don't see a backup at 1B for that game besides Wieters.

So you don't think Joseph makes the team?

He has 40 games at first in the minors.

I think Arencibia has a puncher's chance with a good spring. Arencibia is another guy that has 1B experience. Arencibia also has a MiL option. If he has an opt-out and they want to keep him, they could add him to the ML roster for OD, then option him on day 2 when Davis returns. Of course, they would still have to DFA someone at that point.

Right now they have 9 relievers that can't be optioned. That's two roster spots that can potentially open up if they 1) don't go to an 8 man pen, and 2) don't have any of them on the 15 day DL.

This is another good point. The Rule 5 guys will almost certainly be relinquishing their 40-man spots early on.

I would be surprised if Hassan didn't get claimed. Excellent platoon player. If his defense were better, he would definitely get claimed. And for the person who was disappointed about losing Hassan because he can backup CF, that's not really true. You don't want him in CF except for emergencies.

I think he's better and younger than Reimold. That's why I'm disappointed. But it's a numbers game and Hassan was on the 40 and Reimold wasn't. We'll see if he gets claimed.

    • I think it’s like when our fans are terrified because a team brings up a spot starter from AAA and we fear they are going to turn into Cy Young.
    • “It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.” — A Bartlett Giamatti https://mason.gmu.edu/~rmatz/giamatti.html

By any measure, Cowser is leading AL rookies in WAR, and it’s not that close. “

    • Every year at the end of the season, I feel a little melancholy. For me, the end of summer is not the start of school or the arrival of fall, but the end of baseball season. Today is the last day of a long song, and I will miss it. I know we have at least four more days, but those are in a different category, although I will miss that too when it ends. During the darkest days of the season, I posted frequently that the worst day of baseball is still baseball. When the Os played terrible, I would go focus on the Brewers or the A’s or Mariners(who were almost as frustrating as the Os) and follow along with former Orioles, rooting for all of them. That will all stop by tonight, and I will miss it until next February, when pitchers and catchers report. If I’m still here, I’ll be here.    Go Os…
    • We have to wait and see. But it shouldn’t matter as you have to beat whomever you play.
