Alex Hassan was designated for assignment

I would be surprised if Hassan didn't get claimed. Excellent platoon player. If his defense were better, he would definitely get claimed. And for the person who was disappointed about losing Hassan because he can backup CF, that's not really true. You don't want him in CF except for emergencies.

I think he's better and younger than Reimold. That's why I'm disappointed. But it's a numbers game and Hassan was on the 40 and Reimold wasn't. We'll see if he gets claimed.

I would assume with the health issue and such that he made it through to the As and the Os before, he probably will again.

Well Toronto losing Saunders could hurt the Os chances of keeping Hassan.

Possibly. In addition to pillar, they also have Dirks (coming back from injury) and Chris Dickerson. Maybe Hassan is viewed as a better option, maybe not. Either way, that's a decent size hole in their lineup along with 2B.

Hassan can't play any infield position, unlike Paredes. From a corner outfielder, I want HRs or SBs. Hassan hasn't hit for power in the minors. Now 26, there shouldn't be an expectation that he will become a power hitter in the majors. And he doesn't steal bases. Markakis lost too much power and was unable to steal bases. Reimold looked like he was going to give both, before blowing out his Achilles, etc. Alvarez has some power, at least.

Mark me down for not being surprised to see Hassan dfa'd

I think I'd rather have Hassan than 2 Rule 5 guys. I would have liked to see us keep Hassan and give 1 of those guys back. The chances of a rule 5 guy panning out are so small. A guy like Hassan is much more likely to contribute.

So, you don't think we will have to add someone to the 40 man roster anyway?

Hassan had one plus. Good minor league splits against LHP. He provided little else. He wasn't going to make the team and Norfolk is crowded anyway.

He had a strong chance to make the team if we had not resigned De Aza, Delmon. Signed Reimold and Parmalee. And Traded for Snider. He was a slot holder until it became evident that he had the rectus abdominus surgery last fall. Even if he is recovered, that can be tough for a year.

Check out this cool 40 man roster map. I have no idea what it means, but it suggests something deep. (this is pre-Hassan)

Basically the green rectangle is current players and all the lines breaking off show the way the players made it to the team via trades and what not.

We've kept three in a row now?

    • I think it’s like when our fans are terrified because a team brings up a spot starter from AAA and we fear they are going to turn into Cy Young.
    • “It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.” — A Bartlett Giamatti https://mason.gmu.edu/~rmatz/giamatti.html

By any measure, Cowser is leading AL rookies in WAR, and it’s not that close. “

    • Every year at the end of the season, I feel a little melancholy. For me, the end of summer is not the start of school or the arrival of fall, but the end of baseball season. Today is the last day of a long song, and I will miss it. I know we have at least four more days, but those are in a different category, although I will miss that too when it ends. During the darkest days of the season, I posted frequently that the worst day of baseball is still baseball. When the Os played terrible, I would go focus on the Brewers or the A’s or Mariners(who were almost as frustrating as the Os) and follow along with former Orioles, rooting for all of them. That will all stop by tonight, and I will miss it until next February, when pitchers and catchers report. If I’m still here, I’ll be here.    Go Os…
    • We have to wait and see. But it shouldn’t matter as you have to beat whomever you play.
