If, IF, if Ubaldo continues to dominate?

Can someone explain if it is possible to put Ubaldo on waivers (with his permission) to the minors?

I mean, no one is going to claim him and his salary.

Do the O's have to pay that if he is claimed? How does this work..?

I believe you could do it with his permission. Which I doubt he'd give. Then you'd have to release him and pay him anyway.

My own feeling is, the first day of spring training is about as meaningless as it gets. I'd rather he pitched two 1-2-3 innings, but it's way too soon to have any concerns.

And who from the pen do you release or send to Norfolk? Britton, O'Day, Wright, Hunter, and Brach are locks. If we don't roster Garcia, he goes back to Boston. Do you want to let Matusz walk away with $3M to make room for Ubaldo, another RHP?

Keep Britton, O'Day, Hunter, Brach, W Wright, Garcia and Ubaldo. Trade Matusz and Webb. Its not how many lefties you have, its how many pitchers you have that can get out lefties.

Of course, Frobby is right. It too early to hit the panic button. Wait and see who is healthy at the end of ST.

Maybe he sucks because our dysfunctional organization hasn't effectively communicated with him and let him know how much we appreciate his efforts. I'm thinking a nice hand signed card from Dan and a gift basket would help turn things around.

You forgot the 8 month around the world cruise that departs tomorrow.

Could be Matusz to the DL. Injury to his non-throwing shoulder per Roch today.

Doesn't sound serious yet, but maybe it gets worse if we need to make room for Ubaldo in the pen.

Why so? I am interested in hearing your take.

When the thread begins with "I know, I know, it was only the first spring training game" you shouldn't be allowed to post any more text.

(I am not seriously advocating censorship, I just can't believe yesterday sparked anyone to think anything different about anything)

It is too early to judge. Madison Bumgarner truly sucked during his ST debut today. He gave up 4 runs in 1 2/3 innings. And I don't see anyone calling for Bumgarner's release or to be moved to the bullpen. There is a good chance that Ubaldo's disastrous ST outing was just one of those things and he'll do a lot better in the future.

how many guys did Bumgarner hit? How many walks?

it didn't sound like a finesse issue with Ubaldo. Giving up hits at least means the ball is over the plate somewhere.

I might agree with you if someone like Tillman put up the same pitching line, but given Ubaldo's performance last year, it would be nice if he shows something positive this Spring, no?

Again. First ST game. Period. Doesn't matter who it is.

Buck is not starting him if he pitches like he did yesterday. He will go to the pen.

His velocity was good. I think he was better than last year.

Spring Training:

- In 2012 we lost to a Florida Community College team. Our team was awful all year.

- In 2014 we lost a 5 inning scrimmage to the Frederick Keys. Our team was awful all year.

- Last season Ubaldo's first outing was great, I believe. He won the Cy young.

(All regular stats pulled from memory of overreaction threads)
