Hunter Harvey to the big leagues ?

wildcard

Roch says the thinks Hunter Harvey could be in the majors later this season. Now that is the express train considering a few factors:

1) He probably starts the year in High A ball in Frederick.

2) He only pitched 87.2 innings last year which probably limits him to about 120 IP this year.

3) He is only 20 years old.

Optimism reigns.

I also liked his assessment of Alvarez and the statement that Cabrera has not done enough so far to beat out Schoop or Flaherty. Sounds about right. Cabrera has to pick it up if he wants to avoid a trip to the minors.

Bundy made it in his first full season. I could see Harvey getting called up to perform a similar role if there is a need.

The difference was that Bundy was on the 40 man roster already and Harvey is not. I don't see a reason to add him in September, just to block a 40 man spot all winter long, to pitch two innings or so out o the bullpen.

Like I said there would have to be a need.

If the O's are in contention and the bullpen needs a boost I can see Dan doing it.

I'm with Can - I think any elite prospect at Harvey's experience level has a shot at the David Price/Francisco Rodriguez postseason bullpen reinforcement path if they are as brilliant as everyone hopes all summer long. We saw it with Finnegan in KC last year, and even in our own org with Bundy in 2012.

I believe the only thing that stopped Bundy in 2012 was his diminished effectiveness/deteriorating ligament as he rose the ladder. He still did enough to get the cup of coffee but not earn Price/K-Rod consideration. In spring training the sky is the limit.

Shades of Milt Pappas, Wally Bunker and Jim Palmer, all of whom had fine seasons at ages 19 or 20. A different era, of course, and Bunker and Palmer suffered arm troubles early on. Still, two out of three went on to have great MLB careers.

There's a difference in rushing a young pitcher and letting him come up in September and log some innings out of the pen. Hopefully we'll be in a pennant race and he can come in and go all out for an inning or even a batter. Not have to worry about scouting reports and navigating through a lineup 3 times.

I do not expect to see Harvey in the majors this season, even in September.

I agree. The only way Harvey sees the majors this year is if he's lights out, the Orioles have a lot of injuries, they believe he can be a difference maker and has innings left. Even with Duquette's penchant to rush guys to the majors, I don't see a realistic set of events that will see Harvey in the majors this year.

As someone stated earlier in the thread, Bundy was a different case because he was already on the 40-man roster.
