M. Wright, Wilson and Davies

All three of these guys slated for our AAA rotation have acquitted themselves well in ST so far:

Wright: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K's

Wilson: 6.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K's

Davies: 1.0 IP, 0 K, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

Davies also pitched in a "B" game this weekend and pitched a perfect inning, striking out two.

I think we're in good shape having these three in AAA and available for call-ups as the need arises.

I like them all. I am glad we have developed them. None of them were highly sought after.

All three were chosen in the 2011 draft: Wright in the 3rd round (East Carolina, 3rd yr. college), Wilson in the 10th (UVa, 4th yr. college) , Davies in the 26th (HS).

Don't let Davies' late selection fool you: he was given a $575,000 bonus to sign, third-highest of anyone the Orioles drafted in 2011. Wright got a $363 k bonus as the O's 3rd rounder. Wilson is the true underdog here -- drafted in the 35th round as a 3rd year collegian, he opted to stay at UVa, moved up to the 10th round and got all of $20,000 as a signing bonus.

I agree on these three looking good this spring. Call ups have to include McFarland and Steve Johnson. Steve looks really good this spring. If the Verrett trade happens he is also in the mix.

The O's have some depth here.

I agree with these comments. I still think there's a decent chance McFarland makes the OD roster, though obviously the bullpen is crowded. I will be shocked if Dan Duquette doesn't make a couple of trades towards the end of spring training.

Dedication to slog it out in the minors with only a 20K bonus to ease your way.

I am genuinely curious how McFarland is looking at 2015. I think this could be a year for him where a step back could mean two steps forward for the long haul.

His long range potential is I think better served in April/May/June by gunning for International League Cy Young than being the Orioles long range guy over Ubaldo. The guys in this thread are the ones he needs to outperform for 2016, when Norris and Chen's jobs conceivably come open. What he can do in April/May/June is make himself the leader of that pack and maybe even vault Ubaldo, but he needs starters innings to do that.

I do think Buck/Dan still have hopes for 30 starts at the MLB minimum for TJ over the next couple years if he can earn them.

I'm not extremely familiar with Orioles' young pitching prospects (who aren't named Bundy and Harvey).

How would you say Berry matches up to the three guys you listed when it come to long-term upside?

He's definitely in the mix. I didn't mention him in the OP because he has been roughed up a bit in his outings this spring, but he's definitely a guy who could see action in Baltimore before the year is over.

Tony ranked them this way:

4. Davies

12. Wilson

13. Berry

16. Wright

BA had it:

6. Davies

7. Berry

8. Wright

12. Wilson

BP had it:

6. Davies

7. Wright

8. Berry

Wilson out of the top 10

I don't know if I trust any of these four to become average starters in the majors (maybe Davies). That said, I think each could provide solid production in the bullpen at the major league level. Considering the potential Free Agents at the end of the year, these guys could all play a role come next year.

You just never know. Like a lot of people, I think Wright could turn into a Jim Johnson-type reliever. But it's so hard to tell with pitchers, until they're in front of the bright lights dealing with the best hitters in the world.

    • You always need shuttle guys. Ideally, I would think they’d like to have 2-3 spots they can interchange between 5-6 guys. That allows them to maybe get some younger arms in there, like McDermott and the others we mentioned already.  Bautista, if he is back to his old form, Seranthony, Cano, Soto (who I think may just surprise some people), while Cionel and Akin are not sure things. Either could be moved. They should make some moves there, IMO. Cionel has not really improved as much as I had hoped. Akin has had a very good year. Are they ARB eligible this year?
    • You’re the one who threw Ripken into the discussion.  And I don’t think anyone is necessarily saying that Gunnar will be as good as Ripken.  Cal is 3rd all time in Total Zone Runs for a SS.  But, Cal also proves that you don’t judge a SS solely on how many errors they make.  The years that Cal made 26, 25 and 25 errors, he was +11, +23, +O Rtot.  And  Gunnar is playing a solid SS now by the advanced metrics.
    • Coby's problem is not the SSS at bats, but rather his sample size on defense, both minors and majors. He has no position at this point in his career. He's a DH and not in the lineup today because AS is Dhing. Eloy is on the bench as well. Both are PH options so stay ready.
    • I do not know if there were extenuating circumstances or not.  Could be it's a quieter locker room without the rest of the guys, which would make sense in a concussion situation.  So, maybe I did rush to an unfair conclusion here.  At the time, I felt like it more of a "spring training look" when the starters all leave the field after they're done playing.....so yes, there could be other very reasonable explanations. I'll stand corrected, and retract my conclusion.
    • Message to Coby.....you better learn how to use a glove.
    • Totally agree.  And at no point will some people be able to admit that the shiny, new rookie may be overmatched, and putting him just because hangouters want him in there may not be the best move for team chemistry or results  People need to earn their way when given a chance, and with where we are in the standings, leashes are going to be short.  We're not the White Sox who can afford to play anyone they want because it doesn't matter.
