Tommy Hunter (Among Other Orioles) Trying a New Pitch

It sounds like a slip pitch. All the pressure comes from a tight grip between the thumb and ring finger, same arm motion as a fastball, and mostly looks like a heater coming out of the pitcher's hand. I'm curious if the grip mechanic poses any threat structurally to the hand/forearm/elbow.

This guy says its bad for the decelerator muscles, says it has the same negatives of throwing a tennis ball after a baseball. The balls 'slips' out our the hand while the arm is moving full speed which puts undo stress on the decelerator muscles.

Probably the worst thing for a older pitcher who is using it occasionally. The advice was for kids to avoid it.

In other news, they asked Hunter Harvey to shelf his new pitch for at least this season.

I agree with this. Make him get to the MLB with his bread and butter pitch before trying a unique/gimmick pitch. It might work in the minors but players might take it in the majors. It's nice to know that he has it if he needs it.

(vs. RAYS, 3/30)

Hunter's line looked good today, although I did not see the game.

3 up, 3 down, 2 strikeouts.

(vs. RAYS, 3/31)

Another shutout inning today, but this time he walked a batter (not very common for ""Throwin' Strikes" Hunter.)

Perhaps he is quietly finding a groove/rhythm after some very rough outings earlier this spring.

Hunter got knocked around badly in back-to-back games against the Yankees on April 13th and April 15th respectively, but he appears to have settled in as of late.

(vs. YANKEES, 5/09)

Tommy "Throwin' Strikes" Hunter essentially had to get 4 outs in the 8th inning today.

And as usual, he threw strikes and made the Yankees earn whatever they got.

23 Pitches (16 Strikes, 7 Balls)

He's really improved that breaking pitch. Thank goodness I think he shelved the pitch he was working on in ST. Still, Tommy was a non-tender if I had my way.

So is it a splitter or slider? The one's on the 86 mph range dropping of the table that is. Seemed to go straight down without much in the way of tilt or run that I could tell. Bordick was calling them sliders.

Yeah, he can call it a slider but as you say it doesn't run like one. Tommy throws hard, I think it's a CB with not a quite 12-6 downward plane.

    • I was hoping that would be this season, but he faded this second half. But even Gunnar not living up to his lofty expectation is still a good player with an .811 OPS.
    • Mike Elias simply can't offer Michael Baumann, Cristian Pache, Connor Norby and Kyle Stowers this kind of experience. Jack Flaherty was kind of Meh again, but hey, at least he isn't on Detroit for this weekend. It is a special player to get to watch.    He's reviving some of the Babe Ruth "he hits too brilliantly to let him pitch" stuff, but hombre is going to do whatever he wants to do, it is part of the deal.    It does seem pretty likely the SB to this scale are a 1-time deal with the legs getting the year off from the mound. I do have a baseball-y wish to see if he could be Ken Griffey, Jr. in center field if he tried.

    • Hopefully it will be like giving a blood transfusion to a sickly patient. Yes some players haven't played as well this season, but it's mainly the injuries that have taken it's toll. The lineup gets much better if Westburg, Urias and Mountcastle are back. No longer does Eloy have to play and Holliday can be platooned. Plus O'Hearn will absolutely not see at bats against LHP like he has been recently at times. Webb and Coulombe provide depth to make the bullpen postseason viable. And Coulombe can close games instead of Dominguez assuming he's back all the way.
    • Gunnar stands to improve on: fielding and stolen bases. I also think he’ll have a 1.000OPS season or two before he’s done.
    • Maybe they were going by Tony's reaction, not realizing that with the winning run on third there wasn't any point in running.
    • looks like some of y'all are gonna be pissed when we win 2 of 3 against Detroit, at least one in NY and 2 o 3 against Minn.  I'd be embarassed if I were some of you....projecting the apathy and misery in your own little lives onto our O's.  This is a F upped sport and a team with talent like this can turn on a dime and start winning consistently at any time.  This isn't over.  I you're mad that your life hasn't worked out well......please don't bring the rest of us down.
