Tommy Hunter (Among Other Orioles) Trying a New Pitch

Yeah, he can call it a slider but as you say it doesn't run like one. Tommy throws hard, I think it's a CB with not a quite 12-6 downward plane.

86 mph curve ball with depth like that? Wow. Agree about it basically looking 12-6.

Hunter had an excellent game yesterday, and was key in preserving the Orioles' lead late in the game, enabling them to hang on for the win.

Entering the game in the 6th inning with runners on 1st and 3rd, nobody out, and a run already in, Hunter got 3 consecutive outs without allowing any more runs to score, enabling the Orioles to hang onto their precarious 6-4 lead.

One inning later in the 7th, Hunter made 2 excellent defensive plays. With a runner on 1st base and nobody out, Hunter was falling to his left after releasing a pitch. When a ground ball was hit to his opposite side, Hunter recovered and reversed his field (going to his right, where the ball was hit), picked up the ball, and fired a 95 MPH fastball to Chris Davis at 1st base to just nip Realmuto by a step. That was big because if Realmuto had gotten an infield single, the Marlins would have had runners on 1st and 2nd base with nobody out, and the potential for a big inning. Instead, there was only a runner on 2nd base, and there was one out.

After a passed ball allowed the Marlins runner (Justin Bour) to reach 3rd base, Hunter made another excellent defensive play when he charged a chopper in front of the mound, and caught Bour halfway between 3rd base and home plate. Bour was tagged out after a brief rundown for the 2nd out of the inning. Hunter ended the inning on the next play by getting Hechavarria to fly out to centerfield.

As usual, "Throwin' Strikes" Hunter did not walk any batters, and had a very good strikes-to-balls ratio: O24 Pitches (16 Strikes, 8 Balls)

Outstanding game from Hunter. Especially rescuing Tyler Wilson's inning.

I cringe every time he enters the game. On the game thread we were all questioning the decision to pitch to Stanton with a base open. Buck elected to pitch to him and it worked out. Gotta credit him, he came in, threw strikes, and got the biggest outs of the game for us.

(vs. RED SOX, 6/10)

Hunter may have had his best outing of the season tonight.

He entered the game with runners on 1st and 3rd base, nobody out, and the Orioles clinging to a 3-1 lead. Hunter took all of 6 pitches ...... 6 pitches to get a strikeout AND a double play ball. Unfortunately, Ryan Flaherty (who had plenty of time) made one of the worst throws in recent memory for someone that was attempting to complete a double play, and the Red Sox' runner scored from 3rd base (on Wei-Yin Chen's watch.)

Hunter got the next Red Sox batter out on one pitch, limiting the damage.

The next inning, Tommy went 3 up, 3 down on 10 pitches.

Overall, Hunter had: O 17 Pitches (12 Strikes, 5 Balls.) O 6 Outs, 0 Runs, 0 Hits, 0 Walks, and 1 Strikeout.
