Roch: Buck says Matt Wieters to likely start on DL eligible to return April 11

Irrational I suppose. I feel the same way though. Even a semi-healthy Wieters. For all the past talk about Wieters providing intangibles, I feel the same way about Joseph.

I'm all for Wieters proving he's healthy and can be productive, but if he's lobbing them to second and struggling at the plate, I hope to see Joseph back out there in short order.

If I were to say "I'm not really looking forward to Wieters' return," would I be crazy?

Wieters is obviously a better hitter than Joseph, but he's not a great hitter (and he was cooling off considerably last year pre-injury), and now his arm's damaged. It looks to me like his rejoining the team might cause congestion without actually improving the team all that much.

We played for the AL pennant with Joseph behind the plate for most of the year last year. The pitching staff also had the lowest ERA in the Al during the 2nd half.. not saying Joseph is responsible for most of that, but I like the way he calls a game and frames.. and controls the run game.

When Wieters comes back I hope he plays well enough to get himself some Mauer money and a pick for us, but I suspect teams are going to really test him on the base path.

It's sorta like the Brob return syndrome - back in the day. Did we really want him back? Nice to have him all cozy with Buck in the dugout and all but....:scratchchinhmm:

Yeah kinda. Difference being (imo) that Buck actually likes Wieters.

Glad I'm not the first to say it, but I think CJ is a better defensive catcher (especially accounting for pitch framing) than the 2015 Wieters will be, and I don't think the offensive improvement with Wieters (if any) will be worth it. Someone will take a chance on MW for 2016 and beyond but I don't see it being the O's and I don't see us making a QO. I think he is just a big 10M sunk cost for 2015.

Wieters could still be two months or more out. He has not caught a game yet after the first one. He will need to at least catch a game then probably get a day or two off. Before he gets back up,he will need to proof he can catch a few games in a row,

I figure June. Scott Boras has nothing to do with this. If Wieters was ANY time soon, he would be coming north. I figure that Lavarnway up means that the Orioles think so as well. If it were a short time, Clevenger would have caught the two or three games.

Sticking with first week in May.

The jury is still out. I'll hold off calling him the second coming until he actually catches a full season. And that hasn't happened yet and may not at the ML level because he was never seen as anything more than a journeyman 4A player at best.

Don't get me wrong, Caleb made great strides last season and yet it was only 82 games. I'm not overly impressed with his pitch calling either, it too closely resembles Wieters in that they throw the same pitch repeatedly. Even though it was only one game, Lavarnway impressed me catching Tillman in his last ST appearance. He was constantly mixing pitches. The one mistake Tillman made was on a CH up that Lavarnway may have called as an exception to what I cited in his overall tendency because he wanted CT to work on that pitch in that inning. Hard to explain three of them in a row to a dangerous hitter.

Maybe it's institutional in the Sox organization that their catchers are taught to mix pitches at every level instead of establishing the FB which has been the Orioles philosophy for the last few years.

Honestly, I'm in the same boat. I like him but expected more (not his fault) and knowing he's gone next year I'd rather just get this over with. I know one thing, all the "4 comp picks" people are going to be disappointed. If Wieters takes long to get back and then doesn't look good he may not get the big deal we all once expected. I highly doubt Bud will. Remains to be seen with Davis...

    • You mean a AAAA starter.  Sometimes I think he thinks he’s smarter than everybody else, so he does things that no one else would do just to prove a point. I don’t actually think he wants to spend money on free agents. I think he likes the idea of trying to be the smartest man in the room. I think his attitude is going to change somewhat next off-season, After his many blunders at the trade deadline.
    • I don’t think this is true. He’s had a lot of games as you described and there haven’t been these ten post reactions to said games. He’s going to hit. Would it be nice if he was producing this year like the other rookie Jacksons? Of course but no one (that I’ve seen) on this board is rooting against him or suggesting that he won’t be a high caliber major league hitter. His defense is another thing but he’s going to figure it out at the plate at the MLB level. You’re right though - his nice game should have garnered more attention, especially with the way the year has largely gone for him. I’m not sure what role he has in the postseason other than maybe as a pinch runner. Right now I don’t think I’m putting him ahead of any of the lefty bats on the roster. I guess he’s the only other ‘SS’ they have on the big club so he’s surely going to fill a spot but I can’t think that he plays ahead of anyone, including Rivera right now. It will be interesting to see how Hyde and Co. deploy Holliday come Tuesday.
    • Per Roch, Selby is the call up today, with Davidson presumably DFA.   Guessing today’s pitching looks like:  - Suarez (2-3 IP)  - Webb (1 IP)  - Soto (1 IP)  - Dominguez (1 IP)  - Coulombe (1 IP)  - Selby (2 IP) Bowman fills in gaps as needed.
    • Holliday and Henderson is going to be an elite top 2 in the lineup.
    • He’s also replaced the leg kick with a toe tap. At least with two strikes I noticed.
    • Last year, of 8 WC teams: - 5 went with 12 pitchers - 2 went with 11 pitchers - 1 went with 13 pitchers I expect the Orioles to go with 12 pitchers. Given how Detroit mixes and matches pitching, we need to have enough platoon options.   I do think there is value in having more pitchers, even if it’s just an extra guy for mop up duty that saves pen in blowout game 2 so we aren’t running on fumes in game 3. However, I think 14 position players and 12 pitchers is the right balance for the wild card series.
    • I don't think this is true.  He's struck out 3 times a few times and gone 0-4 several times and 10 posts haven't been made. I hope he has a nice view from the bench during the playoff series and gets an at bat here or there if we're up big or getting blown out.  I'd like to see him put in a lot of work this offseason and start 2025 on fire.
