Roch: Buck says Matt Wieters to likely start on DL eligible to return April 11

Honestly, I'm in the same boat. I like him but expected more (not his fault) and knowing he's gone next year I'd rather just get this over with. I know one thing, all the "4 comp picks" people are going to be disappointed. If Wieters takes long to get back and then doesn't look good he may not get the big deal we all once expected. I highly doubt Bud will. Remains to be seen with Davis...

They all get a qualifying offer. If they take it, next year we sign no one.

I was saying that I feel the same way Orange82 does about not caring if Wieters comes back or not and am comfortable with Joseph.

Right now I'm more impressed with the adjustment he has made at plate repositioning his hands. It seems to be helping him load and get to point of contact better.

Yeah, he was too much of a pull hitter last year. I also think he just faded at the end because of fatigue/conditioning. Hopefully hes in better shape this year. I think he's a guy that might be better catching a 100 games instead of 120-130. Kinda miss Hundley right now.

I've been a big Wieters fan, but his refusal to even listen to the Orioles offers for extensions after 2012 and 2013 due to having Boras as his agent has really turned me off. I know its a business, but when YOUR team is trying to extend you 2 to 3 years before your contract expires, you at least listen. Now with his injury, Matt's decision to rely on Boras' advice could cost him a ton of money.

Joseph and even Lavarnway now seem to be more than capable of handling the catching duties. Our pitching staff clearly likes having Caleb behind the plate. We might not have the All-Star representative, or the flashy name, but I'm fine with Joseph and Lavarnway.

It'll be nice to have Matt back and see if he can bounce back, but I would be in no hurry to extend him after this season.

Sticking with first week in May.

From what I heard and granted who knows, this from two writers that late May to early June if everything goes right. We shall see.

Matt Wieters has resumed throwing and is now testing his surgically repaired right elbow, but the Orioles catcher wouldnt say whether he believes he could return from the 15-day disabled list by the beginning of next month. ?I think it?s realistic, but at the same time, we?re not really putting any kind of date out there because its a matter of how it goes and how it feels, Wieters said. ?I think it can turn the corner in the course of a couple of days or it can take longer. Its a matter of letting it kind of all play out and whenever I feel like I can contribute to the team, and help the team, then I?ll come back. ...

Rehab games at the end of May? I find it kind of hard to believe it would take that long. Sigh.

In any event, remember how it was OK we lost Cruz and Markakis because Manny and Wieters were coming back? This is why that logic never made any sense. Players get hurt, sometimes two years in a row. And if it wasn't Wieters, it could be someone else. The idea that we'd somehow be 100% healthy in 2015 was totally illogical.

The draft picks were never a good strategy in my opinion. If some of these guys have good/great years then it pays off two fold, winning now and the draft pick. I don't believe DD and the other decision makers had a plan to offer about a dozen qualifying offers in order to build a team for the future.

I think it may also be in Matt's better interest to get a one year deal with an option in Baltimore to prove he is healthy. I doubt it works that way with Boras as his agent, but we will see. The Dodgers really could use a catcher.

The Dodgers traded for Grandal in the Kemp deal. Why do they need another catcher?

I think the Cruz was 50/50 whether it was ok - I think we should have kept him. Nick? yes, most thought it was ok and don't believe him staying would be making a positive difference v. what we have.

I think Roch had a brain fart. His post now reads: "Showalter said it's possible that Wieters will be playing in rehab games by the end of April, though he's hoping it happens earlier."

Much better.

Yup. All goes well the target date is around May 15th for the bigs. Of course, Wieters has not caught much over the last year and it well be interesting to see when he catches back to back games and how he fairs after that

    • You mean a AAAA starter.  Sometimes I think he thinks he’s smarter than everybody else, so he does things that no one else would do just to prove a point. I don’t actually think he wants to spend money on free agents. I think he likes the idea of trying to be the smartest man in the room. I think his attitude is going to change somewhat next off-season, After his many blunders at the trade deadline.
    • I don’t think this is true. He’s had a lot of games as you described and there haven’t been these ten post reactions to said games. He’s going to hit. Would it be nice if he was producing this year like the other rookie Jacksons? Of course but no one (that I’ve seen) on this board is rooting against him or suggesting that he won’t be a high caliber major league hitter. His defense is another thing but he’s going to figure it out at the plate at the MLB level. You’re right though - his nice game should have garnered more attention, especially with the way the year has largely gone for him. I’m not sure what role he has in the postseason other than maybe as a pinch runner. Right now I don’t think I’m putting him ahead of any of the lefty bats on the roster. I guess he’s the only other ‘SS’ they have on the big club so he’s surely going to fill a spot but I can’t think that he plays ahead of anyone, including Rivera right now. It will be interesting to see how Hyde and Co. deploy Holliday come Tuesday.
    • Per Roch, Selby is the call up today, with Davidson presumably DFA.   Guessing today’s pitching looks like:  - Suarez (2-3 IP)  - Webb (1 IP)  - Soto (1 IP)  - Dominguez (1 IP)  - Coulombe (1 IP)  - Selby (2 IP) Bowman fills in gaps as needed.
    • Holliday and Henderson is going to be an elite top 2 in the lineup.
    • He’s also replaced the leg kick with a toe tap. At least with two strikes I noticed.
    • Last year, of 8 WC teams: - 5 went with 12 pitchers - 2 went with 11 pitchers - 1 went with 13 pitchers I expect the Orioles to go with 12 pitchers. Given how Detroit mixes and matches pitching, we need to have enough platoon options.   I do think there is value in having more pitchers, even if it’s just an extra guy for mop up duty that saves pen in blowout game 2 so we aren’t running on fumes in game 3. However, I think 14 position players and 12 pitchers is the right balance for the wild card series.
    • I don't think this is true.  He's struck out 3 times a few times and gone 0-4 several times and 10 posts haven't been made. I hope he has a nice view from the bench during the playoff series and gets an at bat here or there if we're up big or getting blown out.  I'd like to see him put in a lot of work this offseason and start 2025 on fire.
