What do expect from the O's in the next two weeks?

Open Day is two weeks from tomorrow. What do you see the O's doing over the next two weeks?

Here is my list:

1) I expect to see Cabrera play more at 2B.

He has only started 5 games there this spring and his poor defense there so far is a major reason why Flaherty has the edge on making the Opening Day O's roster. I expect Buck to take a closer look at Cabrera at 2B.

2) I expect Dan and Buck shuffle pitchers for Opening Day.

The O's currently have 18 pitcher in camp. Optioning McFarland and Wilson plus assigning Roe to Norfolk gets them to 15. The last three will be tricky.

- Outright Webb to Norfolk. If the O's DFA Webb some team would have to pick up his 2.75m salary. They may not. The salary could get him to pass through waivers. He has never been outrighted so he is required to accept the assignment to Norfolk.

- I think the Mets and any other team that is involved in trading for Matusz will try to so on the cheap without paying all of his salary. The O's may have to show the other team(s) that they do not have to move Matusz in order so the O's can get the best deal for him. I could see the O's optioning Gonzo to Norfolk just to prove the point. Not that he would stay there long but long enough to get good trade value for Matusz.

- The last spot is between two moves. One, someone get injured and put on the DL. Or two, they return Verrett. Could be either one but if I were an O's pitcher I would stay out of the training room for the next two weeks.

3) I expect to see catcher Brian Ward playing games with the major league club at some point over the next two weeks.

Steve Melewski thinks the Ward is still in the running for a the back up catcher job. I don't think Buck is too satisfied with Arencibia or Clevenger and Lavarnway has a contractual issue with joining the O's for a short period. When Wieters is placed on the DL, Ward can be recalled for the minors without serving 10 days there.

There are the moves I expect in the next two weeks. What do you see happening?

Sounds about right. I was not aware that Webb could go to Norfolk. That explains why there hasn't been much trade talk around him lately.

I would add that they also have to declare a winner between Paredes and Lough for the final bench spot, and do something with the loser.

Also, this is just my spring training paranoia, but I have a feeling Norris is going to start the season on the DL.

I didn't include Lough and Paredes because I don't know what to expect. It could go neither way.

Norris to the DL could help the log jam. But there are two weeks to go so its too early to know if he is injured for OD.

Lavarnway seems to be the best option, but they may go with Clevenger because he is already on the 40-man. Not a big deal either way, just something to talk about on here.

Joe Angle said on the telecast yesterday about Garcia "no way they can give this guy back, his stuff is electric" or something quite similar. I like Logan too. Hopefully he is involved with that Matusz deal.

Ugh. People love Lough on here. I would cut him and have very little regrets.

There is still time for a lot to happen. I believe we have 13 spring training games left to play. My gut tells me Dan has a move or two up his sleeve between now and Opening Day.

I think Buck will want to see a lot of Cabrera and Flaherty over the next two weeks. I think Cabrera has a slight edge at this point but that could change. Paredes has been intriguing but the two errors he made last week didn't help him.

Funny. I think we will see a lot of Cabrera and Flaherty. I think Flaherty has a slight edge because Cabrera has not shown he can play as good defensive 2B. Maybe Cabrera will show he can play 2B by April 6th.

Errors don't mean a lot to a DH/PH.

The Mets are “unlikely” to add a left-handed reliever before Opening Day, a team official tells Mike Puma of the New York Post (Twitter links). The Mets haven’t been particularly interested in many of the available options, and rival teams are asking for a lot in return for their southpaws.

I guess Ward could work his way into the discussion. But what are you trying to say at the end about the 10 day rule? Are you talking about later in the season after Wieters is reactivates?

I messed that up. I was think about when a player is optioned he has to stay down for 10 days. It doesn't apply to Ward because he is on a minor league contract. Sorry for the confusion.

Phillies lost another reliever so he seems pretty sellable to Philadelphia.

Is Philly trying this year though? I mean, to buy a lefty reliever? I would think may be as a starter he might be a fit there.
