In What Scenarios Do We Keep Both Garcia and Verrett?

Easy answer-Matusz traded for Verrrett, we keep Garcia.

What other options do you see?

I know the consensus is that Verrett is easily replaceable but not sure I agree with that. I think he might be a solid starter potentially. He has looked good so far (albeit against watered-down competition).

What are your thoughts?

I think Webb is sent to AAA despite his contract (which make ensure he gets to AAA)

Well the basic understanding is that if you trade for Verrett, he has to pass through waivers. Not so sure he doesn't get claimed. If you don't risk passing him through waivers, than you have two Rule 5 guys and zero flexibility in the bullpen.

Trading Norris, Matusz, and Webb helps. But still way to unrealistic.

Jon Heyman just said Verrett has the upper hand over Garcia .

I saw that too, in this article: http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/writer/jon-heyman/25122582/orioles-are-that-rare-spring-team-with-too-much-pitching-so-what-to-do

But it doesn't sound like Heyman has any particular insight. He doesn't quote anybody or cite any sources. He might've just looked at a stat sheet, noticed that Verrett has pitched more innings than Garcia, and guessed that Verrett has the upper hand for that reason.

Wonder what his rationale is for that statement. It is hard to take anything national writers say as noteworthy.

No way I believe with Garcia's stuff he doesn't have the upper hand...so I take that with a grain of salt.

This is the first I am reading of this...if this is true, this is not a panacea for our bullpen logjam.

Why does Verrett have to pass through waivers? Doesn't he have all of his options?

I forget which thread it was that we had this long long conversation trying to understand the rules. Weams, WC, Frobby, or someone else might be able to link to it.

I think Garcia starts the year on the DL and we then wait for an injury to someone else to put him on the roster and try to get his "days" in. Hopefully he does well and stays. Verrett' date=' I don't see much hope without a trade.[/quote']

This definitely crossed my mind and I am sure the Orioles...

Verrett would have to pass through waivers for the Orioles to trade for his rights.

That's not how I understand it. Verrett would have to pass through waivers to be optioned to our minor league system. Also if we no longer want him, he is placed on waivers and if he passes through he is offered back to the original team.

If we trade for him, he becomes ours and we can option him however we want. That's why there's so much talk about the Mets and Matusz.

That was my understanding as well, first I am hearing of this.
