Lough

I was just watching some video from last year and I have to ask....do we have a better outfielder (with the glove)? I'll be the first to admit that Jones is a better all around outfielder, but Lough gets to everything.

I know he doesn't have the bat that some of our other outfielders do, but if he's healthy I think he saves more runs than he costs us in LF compared to the others. I'm sure that there are stats that say he isn't the best option if everyone is healthy, but anyone that watched the ALCS has to admit that we lost t least two of those games because of some great defense by the Royals OF. How do you not have him in LF if fully healthy? I know there are others on here that are more stat savvy, I just know what I see with my eyes.

Feedback?

Absolutely by range. Others have shown well out there (Jones has improved a lot, and Pearce was a surprise) but I agree, Lough is the best. If I knew for certain he'd put up another 96 OPS+ season, he'd make the team one way or another.

Incidentally, none of Lough, De Aza or Snider are hitting well this spring.

He made a bunch of bad throws last year. There is more to being a corner outfielder than defense. Sorry I don't see him being a major league quality player.

He's put up 4.1 rWAR in the last 2 seasons in 208 games. Of those 208 games, he's made just 113 starts and played 89 complete games. And he's still put up 4.1 WAR. The fact that he is a major league player isn't debatable.

Yet it's one of the most hotly debated subjects on the OH :-)

Funny how that works.

Lough seems like a really nice guy, he works hard, and he's a heck of a defender... but I really, really don't think he has the bat to do much here and I wouldn't care in the least if he ended up elsewhere. In the least, he'd need to be a much better base stealer for me to want him here despite the weak hitting. I'll root for him as an underdog and an Oriole but IMO there's some strange, excessive attachment to him here.

I don't believe in the defensive WAR that they come up for outfielders is legit. I said he wasn't a major league quality player. Obviously he was in the majors last season but mostly was used as a defensive replacement. I don't see him being on the team this year. But who knows I could be wrong. They had Nick Johnson on the team. So anything is possible.

Fair enough. I agree that he seems to have a candy arm but that's not based on very many throws. I remember one throw in particular that took about 7 bounces from left field to home plate.
