I liked this idea too but it has been discounted on numerous threads. We could only trade for them if they pass through waivers first.

I haven't seen anyone address this yet so I apologize if it's a stupid question: couldn't we just trade Matusz for a PTBNL to the original team of a rule 5 guy, return the rule 5 player and them have him be the PTBNL?

It is possible, but Verrett has to pass thru waivers to make it back to the Mets. Which is unlikely.

If we tried to pass him back him back to the Mets, does he have to pass clear thru waivers (all 29 teams) or just the teams behind us? Which would only be one or two teams.

What I'm asking, do the teams that already passed on him once get another chance to take him?

When players are exposed to waivers they are exposed to all 29 remaining teams.

Actually, I proposed that here, and suggested that the two parties should first agree on alternative compensation for Matusz, just in case Verrett is claimed on waivers.Putting Verrett on waivers just before the beginning of the season seems (to me) like the best time to pass him through.
