Trading for one of our Rule 5 picks would require him first clearing waivers (all 29 teams).

Since the Orioles appear to be looking for ways to keep both, I doubt it really matters.

To keep them requires a trade, or having each on the MLB roster all season. And as MDB says, that requires a waiver opportunity for all 28 other teams. And an offer back to the originator. Before being traded. Maybe the Red Sox could use a catcher since Christian Vazquez is following the trail that Matt blazed. I'd give them Brian Ward. They have seen him in instructs.

The title implies they have to clear waivers before we could even trade for them though.

I know that. But I thought if we traded for them from their original team, we could then send them down.

After they wave cleared waivers before we traded for them.

Waivers, Cleared, Off 40 man, Offered back to original team, Trade, Assignment to the minor league team. That is the order.

When they are waived' date=' and if they are picked up by another team, do they keep their rule V status? Do they then have to remain on the 25 man roster or be offered back? Who would they be offered back to? The O's or Mets and or Six?[/quote']

Yes, they keep their Rule 5 status until 1 of 3 things happens:

1 - They complete the season on a 25-man major league roster

2 - They clear waivers and are returned to the team from which they were originally drafted (who then can trade them)

3 - They clear waivers and the team from which they were originally drafted declines the opportunity to reclaim them.

If #3 were to happen (it never does), the drafting team could then option the player to the minor leagues.

Always the Mets or Redsox. Never the Astros or Orioles. Yes, they would still have to stay on the claiming team all year.

I would be shocked if Boston would trade us Garcia. No real reason for them to do so. Don't see them wanting to deal him to any team nevermind a team in the same division. A Verrett trade- if he clears waivers - would be much more likely.
