Any chance we trade Jesse Garcia?

If we end up not keeping Garcia, maybe it would be better to trade him.

There must be some crappy teams out there who aren't in the hunt this year, need pitching, and would be willing to keep him up this year so they can control him for five more years. Even if they give us very little, it could be better for the O's to control where he goes.

Not only did you start a thread about a player whose name you don't know but you somehow missed how we can't trade him either.

Of course we can trade him. We traded to get him. He would still carry the Rule 5 stigma, and his new team would have to keep him up or risk losing him, but we can trade him.

The teams out of the hunt are the same teams that have first dips in the waiver claim so I don't know if anyone will actually trade for him unless they are trading cash considerations determined by how long he is on the roster.

The Red Sox would have a good shot at him, based on their awful season last year. They may feel they made a mistake letting him go. And Garcia has to be better than Workman, right?

I did detailed research on the Rule 5 picks for the last three years -2011-2013. It showed that teams don't trade for Rule 5 players. Two were claimed on waivers by teams other than their original team but those two were returned later.

Best bet is:

1. You keep them

2. You send them back

3. You trade with the original team so you can keep them

Not much else is likely with Garcia and/or Verrett.

Thanks for doing the research.

I could see both Garcia and Verrett being claimed. Most rule 5ers don't show as well as tear two have.

No one would trade for a guy they absolutely have to keep on their 25-man roster or lose to the original team. Then you're giving up a player, and then potentially giving up the player you gave up a player for.

A rule 5 player is much like a player who is out of options. Teams do trade for players who are out of options (who were DFA'ed). It isn't likely but I would say "no one."

Isn't his name Jason?

I would prefer to trade him if we aren't keeping him.

Yeah, no one gets his name right. Someone posted a link to an article here recently where the writer called him Jose Garcia.

He's going to be checking his ID five times a day to make sure he's not the one who is off.
