Connolly on Ryan Webb

wildcard

You know, when I said Cabrera could end up in AAA, some people said he makes too much money for AAA, which is 2.4 million.

But, it's okay to send Webb to AAA, making 2.7 million?

The difference is that the guys Cabrera is competing against have options whereas the bullpen candidates do not.

BTW, I believe Web will get claimed. I'd be surprised if we can pass him through. Happy, but surprised.

It maybe too simple, but to me, you field the best 25 man roster you can, regardless of options and all that mess.

I tend to agree in theory, but in practice it's a little more nuanced. For example, I find it very difficult to say that Garcia, who has never recorded an out above A ball, is better than Webb, Matusz, and McFarland. But I'd have him on the roster over some of those guys in order to add the talent. Also, Kris Bryant is easily among the best 25 players for the Cubs, but I see why they want to hold him back.

Webb had a 2.95 FIP last year (~56th overall among relievers with > 40ip in 2014) so I wouldn't be surprised if someone was willing to add him to their pen.

Lots of comparable relievers earn 3-5M, so I don't think the his salary will be considered prohibitive.

Cabrera has an option. He can certainly be sent down. Who are these people who dispute that?

The problem is that the Orioles recent success has been based on a 40 man roster and not just the 25 man one. So in essence, you are suggesting that we go back to the dark ages, and not the roster management that has been such a part of our success.

He said that people have had the opinion that Cabrera is being paid too much money for the Orioles to be willing to have him in the minors, not that we weren't able to do so.

I hope he gets claimed. Would be nice to move his salary. Have plenty others that could serve as 8th man in the bullpen

By trading Matusz and sending Webb down the O's cam keep the rule five guys. I agree that Webb won't risk losing the 2.7 and accepts the assignment.

Two out of three. Still need the 6th starter to be sent to Norfolk and not the bullpen.
