They know what Flaherty can do, and Cabrera isn't the defensive player Flaherty is, and maybe they are just trying to give him some reps?

You might very well be right, who knows at this point, other than God and Buck? LOL

Flash is my pick too. I'm just voting the hot hand to be right. :D

Flaherty for opening day (4 for 9 with 2 doubles) against Archer, Cabrera most days after that.

Hah, good call. Buck loves playing the matchups, so this could very well happen. I too favor Cabrera to start most days too, just because he adds a speed element that's so blatantly missing from this team.

Surprised by the Flaherty votes. Not sure what more Cabrera needs to to do to prove his capabilities. This is one of the reasons he was signed in the first place, to start at SS if JJ had to spend time on the DL.

How about play good defense and not be late on throws and not be an error machine?

Good point. And this can't be proven obviously, but even if for only the one game, I think Buck would start Flash on OD on principle....loyalty...Flash has been here. Just my hunch. I'll be genuinely surprised if Flash doesn't start on OD.

So I'd agree....Flash for OD, and then Cabrera most of the time until JJ's back. I think we know what we have in Flash - a versatile utility player who Buck is comfortable with. Cabrera has had some injuries and has been inconsistent, but I don't think anyone can deny that his ceiling is significantly higher than Flash.

Could be, but if Buck thinks he can resurrect the 2013 Cabrera he won't worry about Flash's feelings.

Holy cherry-picking, Batman! When you're citing batting average instead of stats that actually mean something...

Tell that to Ted Williams, George Brett, Rod Carew...

Implying that batting average doesn't ''actually mean something'' is ridiculous. Firstly, it's a true ratio, not a contrived formula. Secondly, OBP is built primarily on BA. Thirdly, most players with low BAs aren't getting walked a lot.

I agree that guys like Everth should be judged by OBP more than by BA, since he's a base stealer and run scorer more than he is a run producer. But BA is not ''pure luck,'' as some have asserted. There's very little luck to batting average to begin with, and even that gets evened out. The highest BAs are almost always held by excellent hitters. (Denver-effect not withstanding).

You think Flaherty rates as the better defender at SS? I don't. Flaherty does not have the range nor arm strength from the hole that Cabrera does.

Yeah, it looks to me that Cabrera is the better defender at SS from what I've seen.

    • I hope Elias and Adley have as much success together as Belichick and Brady before in the long run of time baseball probably creates some data what happens with one but not the other. I do really enjoy Elias having grown up with OPACY before the Nats, and hope he'll be around for the long haul.   I think chances are at least decent there, but I do also think Mike Elias vs. the field might be an interesting prop bet if Hal Steinbrenner ever lets go of huckleberry Brian Cashman. From Sig interviews, I'm pretty sure he'll stick with Elias as long as he is able. I guess POBO Eve Rosenbaum here could be fun if succession ever became necessary.
    • And, the Opening Poster was clearly rushed to this message board, had a huge swing and a miss, and needs to be sent down to reset.
    • Lost in the cut play was that HJ got no help from Holliday who hesitated as if he had to cover the bag (he's not a 2b yet).   HJ made a poor throw but Holliday has to be in the correct position for the cut-not running and expecting the RF to pick him up.  Palmer thought they had a play at second but with Holliday hesitating and not lined up he would have to catch the ball then set and then throw against his momentum which isn't easy.  Not excusing the poor throw but the execution of the throw is a lot easier if the first cut in lined up correctly and not still moving.
    • Grayson command (at least to me) is unusually poor for an elite starter.  He often gets away with it because his stuff is so darn nasty.  Even last night, Grayson got 14 swing and misses. all that being said, I do wonder if Grayson was tipping his pitches again (it was speculated in 1H23).  Because the Angels got such high EVs on a variety of different pitch types, and not just sitting on one specific pitch.
    • That's what, second on the team?  😉
    • I like how you credit Elias and Company for developing Grayson but forget that Hall showed little progress under their development. I don't see how you can look at what they have accomplished with hitters and think, hey, let's also try and give them credit for a pitcher that Dan's team selected. Is what they've accomplished with hitters not enough to warrant a thread praising them? The post would be a lot stronger without trying to shoehorn in the pitcher.
    • 5 turns along Grayson sits 5th in 4-seam fastball velo among SP, lagging... Hunter Greene, 2019 TJ Jared Jones, a survivor like him, so far doing exciting things Jordan HIcks, 2019 TJ Dylan Cease, 2014 TJ Grayson got to 3000 game pitches in 2023; Jared Jones' 2022-2023 looks like 2050 and 2067 pitches according to Fangraphs.
