He's not good enough to be demanding a rotation spot and hes paid to much not to have one. Tough situation they have there. I wouldn't be suprised to see him come back in a Roberts/Payton trade.

This is true. But as stated before, it isnt his fault he is making that muhc.

Please, No! $16 million for the next 2 years. Was a clubhouse problem in St. Louis, and now in Chicago. Why would we want Marquis?

We really wouldnt want him.

However, if the deal was Gallagher, Pie, Cedeno and Marquis for Roberts I would do it.

Don't know if this was in the long Roberts thread, but thought it was interesting.

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/821401,CST-SPT-cside02.article

"Three days into spring training games, and the battle for the Cubs' two openings in the starting rotation already is heating up -- and that's just the boiling commentary between one of the pitchers and the manager.

After a so-so two innings in his debut, pitcher Jason Marquis said Saturday that if he doesn't win a spot in the rotation, he wants to ''take my services elsewhere.''

To which manager Lou Piniella snapped back, ''Well, if that's the case, he can go somewhere else. How's that?''"

I guess this drives his value down as it seems they want to get him out of town before he becomes cancerous.

About 12 hours ago this was all patched up

Piniella and Marquis spoke, they misinterpreted each other, they're both fine with each other

A guy like Marquis is the last guy I'd want around our young pitchers. The whole idea of bringing in another veteran SP is to provide stability, leadership, and serve as almost a 2nd pitching coach for the young guys, isn't it? Marquis has not shown any of those qualities, IMO. If the Cubs say that they won't take Payton unless we take Marquis, then I'd rather keep Payton. At least he's only signed for this year, and for less money. In fact, rumor has it that we could trade Payton to the White Sox for Uribe, who could be our temporary answer at shortsop.

In another Cubs related note, Soriano has broken his middle finger. They say he's only going to miss 5 days, but this could mean they would be less likely to want to trade Murton but more interested in BRob, because if Sori's hitting is affected they will have an even greater need for alead off hitter.

Agreed. If we're taking on Marquis' horrendous contract, Pie, Gallagher, and Ceda/Veal have to be included in the package.

    • What a great example of pedantic! Please tell us you meant to do that. I honestly can’t tell these days.
    • Well it certainly doesn't look like he'll be winning Rookie of Year award. And if we send him down for like the tiniest amount of time, we get him for another year, right? I think if this poor hitting continues it's financial mismanagement not to send him back down. Grayson got sent down and came back way better.
    • He certainly isn't a bust but I wasn't happy with the pick at the time and I don't love using the second overall pick for that type of player profile. Westburg signed for slot so he's irrelevant but Mayo was a great use of the money saved.
    • Think Heston will be the next call up. Mayo’s K/BB ratio is poor and I think they’ll want to see that even out. Stowers and Norby have seen their numbers slip a bit.  It will likely take an injury to an outfielder or first baseman, but I think we see HK next.
    • I have to laugh at some of my pre-draft thoughts as well as others. I will say on behalf of myself and some others is that what we did not understand then was what the Orioles brain trust knew to be their model, and what they best developed. What traits they were looking for is an important thing to know, in hindsight anyway. And really, the Jackson Holliday leap in development was not something most of us heard anything about until about a month before the draft. I saw him the previous summer and I cannot say he was all that impressive, but it was only one look. His physicality took a big jump after that.  I will also add that we’re never going to know what would have happened if they drafted Austin Martin, Jones, Lawler, Lacy, etc. Their development could well have been different as O’s. The funny part of this board, in general, is the absolute certainty some have in their opinions and how eager they are to trash Elias and staff. There is plenty of humility to go around, now that things have played out. It’s fun to finally have a truly great front office and ownership group, and a stacked stable of horses.
