Dan's Strategy This Offseason

Well it is my opinion. Of course he didn't do anything in the off-season before the 2013 season either. So it is purely conjecture.

So DD doesn't do anything and he never signed Cruz and Webb, traded Johnson off.

It's okay to not like the guy, but don't let your judgement affect the facts.

It was smart to not overpay for Markakis or Cruz, but it was disappointing to not improve the team...at all. The team still lacks speed, will still struggle to manufacture runs and will still struggle to consistently have good at bats. Hopefully some of the guys step up and Schoop shows a lot of improvement. I'm glad that the Orioles are relevant again but the AL East is vulnerable so I don't quite understand the strategy

That is not whining. It is my opinion that the team will be worse offensively this year. Your opinion is that Snider and De Aza will make up for the loss of Cruz and Markakis. Having a different opinion that you does not make it whining. And I don't post this a million times. I am not saying woo is me we are going to be in last place. I just think that they will have a hard time covering the injuries that will happen this season. If you look at the line-up today other Machado and Jones you are looking at a pretty weak one. Yes DD has greatly improved the depth of the organization. But he is depending on guys at multiple positions who are pretty suspect. Lets hope it works out.

I agree 100%

Nick's OBP is over-valued because once on base, his numbers taking extra bases (1st to 3rd) and scoring runs were pretty poor. The O's will miss his bat control and the ability to fight during ABs, for sure, but statistically Nick is eminently replaceable. And in fact, I'd wager that a platoon of Pearce/Snider in RF is going to out-perform Nick fairly easily.

True, but I'm concerned b/c Markakis was one of the only guys on the team who consistently had good at bats. Part of the problem was that he was not a lead off hitter. Pearce and Snider have the potential to produce better results than Nick but it's important to remember that Snider hasn't proved anything in the majors and Pearce has been a journeyman who is coming off his only good season. In other words, the Orioles are rolling the dice

Duquette should have spent money on some MOO bats like Fielder and Hamilton. Instead of Jimenez, he should have signed Ervin Santana last year to a four year deal. Harvey and Schoop for Matt Kemp would have been prudent too.

I said before the 2013 season. The stuff you mention is before the 2014 season. And I already said we won the 2014 off-season. When did I say I did not like DD. My point is the team didn't do much this off-season. Like 2013 when we didn't make the playoffs.

You are discounting Nick's OBP and his long pitch at-bats. And his tremendous arm in right.

Yes I am. None of that is worth $11 mil for one year, much less four years. We'll see if Atlanta thinks they were worth all that. And with the salary dump of Kimbrel, the Nick contract looks even worth.

Nolan Reimold produces all that when heathy. He and Nick now have the same affliction. Nolan is under control for two seasons. Or maybe three.

Replacing Nick and Nelson-is that what we are worried about? Go ahead look at our lineup that we beat the Tigers with:

Joseph

Pearce

Schoop

Hardy

Flahery

DeAza

Jones

Markakis

Cruz

Now the main lineup we will have:

Joseph/Wieters (hope to have him half the year)

Davis

Schoop

Hardy

Machado

DeAza/Snider

Jones

Pearce

Young

Now which one will score more runs?

So let's compare: The following positions remain unchanged

2B, SS, LF, CF

Catcher hopefully improves, but we could call that unchanged just to please others

1B gives us Davis instead of Pearce. I think we get similar production, but perhaps more

3B is drastically improved in every way

RF I think is improved with Pearce/Snider giving us more WAR than Nick

DH is where we see the falloff.

So overall, I think only one position has improved greatly and one has dropped off greatly

I also think the potential is there for improved numbers at C, 1B and RF.

That's my opinion, feel free to disagree, but that's how I feel.

So it's settled. You're going to be That Guy for the 2015 season.

Not sure what "that guy means" but I'm assuming that you don't like it when people are critical. Convince me that I'm wrong and that doing nothing and not improving the team was a better alternative. The Orioles will probably have a good team this year that will probably have a chance to make the playoffs. With a couple of relatively minor upgrades they would have been in much better shape. Instead, they did nothing.

What were the moves they should have made?

Tell me exactly what moves you would have made with a 120 million dollar budget to improve the team as it stands. Exactly. I'll praise you when you are done.

Maybe. I def agree that having Machado back is huge. His defense alone make the entire team better but his presence in the lineup is also a drastic improvement

RF is questionable b/c Snider is unproven and it will be interesting to see if Pearce can come anywhere close to how good he was last year.

1B defense should improve with Chris Davis but his .196 average and strikeout rate is hard to forget.

C is interesting b/c I think we are overrating what Wieters brings to the table. He hasn't been a good offensive player and even though his defense is top notch, is it really that much better than what we got from Caleb Joseph?

Not having a DH in the AL is hard to justify

We'll see what happens. Hopefully Chris Davis bounces back b/c that will be huge

But DH is not zero. Tell me how much you expect from Delmon, Paredes, and Nolan from that slot. Plus the bat we pick up at the deadline for the push, unpositioned. What will the drop off be from the dropoff that would have been there for Nelson Cruz? Certainly he does not repeat last season. He never had.

Instead, they did nothing.

That is a massive overstatement and undermines your credibility. They extended JJ. They brought in De Aza and Snider. They increased payroll to keep Tillman, Miguel, De Aza, Pearce, Davis, Wieters, Matusz, Hunter, and probably others I am forgetting. They brought in Cabrera, a stolen base threat and former All Star, and Snider, who put up a higher OPS than Nick last year. They brought in two Rule 5 guys and kept one of them.

DH is the easiest position to fill it's just the difference between a pitcher and an average bat. Not huge at all. But otherwise I praise this post.

    • I have to admit. I'm an addict. I'm an addict not of booze or drugs. I'm an addict for baseball .... It's still THE game for me and I love almost any team sport. But for me, when it's great, it's still the greatest game of them all. I hate to say it, but when my team wins ...it's like a hit of crack or coke and I have never and will never try those drugs. This one is a better high anyway. It's an adrenaline rush for me. It comes from my heart and soul. Like the other night in Anaheim I sat transfixed on the game. I dont need to look at the silly shell games on a scoreboard, nor hear what the players favorite singer is.. or eat a lot of junk, but I DO have to have my bag of peanuts. The Orioles were clinging to a one run lead, when, with the bases loaded, Mike Trout stepped up to the plate...a single and the game is tied...an extra base hit and the Orioles lose. Our pitcher Craig Kimbrel had to throw a strike to one of the all time greats, and somehow, someway, Trout looked at a third strike and the Orioles won. I lept into the air as if I had a million dollars on the game. I never bet on sports, but this was a better high than winning any bet anyway. Because it is pure and it comes from my deep place of caring when the 'Birds' win. Today in Anaheim, another nail biter, the game was in the ninth with two out and a runner on first. Suddenly the runner broke for second and catcher James McCann threw a strike to second base. Gunnar Henderson covering, made the tag and the ump called the runner out. And the game ended that way. Bang Bang. Personally I thought it was a blown call, but after review the call was upheld and the Orioles won another nail biter. I dont watch many other games, but every night I hit the crack pipe" of baseball. It's my addiction. I also love watching fantastic performers. Mookie Betts is an electric ballplayer . can do anything at the plate and in the field. The Orioles' Henderson is a must see ballplayer like Betts is. On Wednesday he hit a home run, a double, a single, drove in 3 runs got hit by a pitch , stole a base and made two game saving plays in the field. Baseball is a team sport but it's also watching the brilliant, mesmerizing individual performances. It's watching the best players in the world do what I think is the most difficult thing in sports , hit a baseball, throw a baseball, and field a baseball. It's hard to do. Anyway,it's still just April and it's a long, long season. Bryant Gumble once had a great line about the difference between football and baseball. He said "Baseball, is a never ending romance, but football is a one night stand." Yep, I'm an addict, a baseball junkie, and I make no apologies for it. I'll never go to rehab for my baseball addiction. I don't NEED to be cured. And I never will be. Jim Bouton said it best in "Ball Four" his great book. "In all the years you grip a baseball...you suddenly remember, it's really the other way around" Exactly.
    • Especially when you factor in the DL Hall trade too.  Suarez and Wells get bumped to the pen only if Bradish and Means are effective starters a decent part of the season.  Would the O's promote Povich or McDermott to pitch relief?  My guess is not anytime soon, but I dunno. A trade would for one or two arms would be best, but trading for good relief pitching is only harder now because so many teams can make the playoffs.
    • But O'Hearn's numbers are inflated because he never bats against lefties, plus he's trash in the outfield.  If Santander's hitting does not improve this season of course you don't give him a QO, but that's unlikely.  He'll probably pick it up as the weather heats up.  Plus Tony plays at least a decent RF and can play first base too.   Like others have said, should the O's offer Santander a QO?  Maybe -- it depends on how he performs and how Kjerstad and Stowers perform.
    • Wait, since when is money no object? It remains to be seen what the budget constraints are going to be with the new ownership, but if Santander is projected to put up 3.0 WAR for $20 million and his replacement (Kjerstad/Cowser/Stowers...) can put up 2.5 WAR for less than a million then that will be factored in.  The goal will never be about being better than the other 29 teams in a payroll vacuum.
    • I think you have a good understanding and I assume you’ve read Ted Williams Science of Hitting.  It’s all about lining up planes of pitch and bat.  Historically with sinkers and low strikes a higher attack angle played and was more in alignment with pitch plane.  In today’s game of spin and high zone fastball an uppercut swing gives you minimal chance and results in top spin grounders and swing & miss.
    • I'll bow to your expertise even if it seems unlikely to my laymen understanding.
    • Actually it will.  As you noted.  MLB pitch plane is like 2-3 degrees.  The more your attack angle increased the more you’re hitting a top spin tennis return.
