If something like this happens, it's all about the youth in my mind. He was Jose Fernandez before Jose Fernandez, in terms of pedigree. After being a 2007 late 1st round pick (Hunter Harvey comp), he got assigned immediately to High-A in spring 2008.

The next spring, the Tigers put him in the show and he survived. He's the super rare guy hitting free agency around the same age A-Rod did, and that Machado/Harper may eventually.

I'm not that surprised, pitchers need to put an insurance policy in place as their careers can change quickly due to injury. When the contract ends at age 30, he'll still be in line for another fat one.

Far from the dumbest. 4 years for a durable guy entering his prime isn't dumb.

The money is dumb. This deal wreaks of desperation emanating from Fenway.

Yeah, the years aren't bad. But, that's not even a good deal at 5/82.5. Way too much money for a league average, at best, SP.
