Camden Depot: Wei-Yin Chen's Velocity

Chen has previously demonstrated that a start or two with lower than average velocity (for him) doesn't mean bad things are necessarily on the horizon. But at some point his velocity is going to stop climbing and will level off and start to decline. As an impending free agent, Chen could be playing for another team before that becomes a real concern. But as the Orioles' lone lefty in the rotation, Chen bears a different kind of responsibility, and the O's would surely welcome a rebound effort in his next start.

Maybe at least part of the reason why Chen is developing his changeup. When pitchers begin to lose velocity, they will need to compensate, develop new pitches, work on their current pitches, develop pin point control. Otherwise their careers will quickly be negatively impacted.

The thing is Chen was throwing harder in 2014 then he was in 2012-2013. He was almost back to his 2009 velocity.

Way too much is being read into Tuesday's game, IMO. Chen was sharp all spring and we heard nothing about a dip in his velocity. He was off his game on Tuesday. It happens.

This. Chen, like any starter, is going to have some bad ones. I see no reason why he won't rebound.

The real question is who takes his spot in the rotation now that his career is over?

Shades of the Orioles' 2014 season, when Duquette did a complete overhaul of the team after they started out at 1-4 after the first 5 games of the season.

There was no reason for Oriole fans to continue to suffer through watching a team with a .200 winning percentage indefinitely.

By the same token, there is no good reason why we should have to bear watching a pitcher with a 6.23 ERA being trotted out to the mound every 5th game.

Get it done Dan, and fast.

Well said. if your first outing is a bad one, watch out, the critics emerge. He'll get better.

When you have a bad outing and the team has seven starters... It is like the backup quarterback conundrum.
