Buck "Carrying a Rule 5 guy"

I may very well be reading too much into it but Buck mentioned this tonight on the postgame. I have to wonder if he is all in on this move or not. Buck usually says a lot but not directly.

Yes if is early but the bullpen is a major issue right now. I know he hasn't looked great either but Buck may have to start using KG late in some big spots. Brach had a nice year last year but he doesn't have a long track record either. Wright is out 4-6 weeks. I hate 3 man benches but they might even have to look at that down the road if this keeps up.

I questioned keeping MacFarland in 2013, but he was at least somewhat useful as a long reliever. Even with him, what was the upside? Spot starter? Long reliever? For a team that is trying to win to keep a rule five player that is going to have some growing pains, he better have incredible upside.

TJM was about adding depth to a team that was still having issues. Remember the bullpen that finished the 2012 season.

Garcia does have a very high upside and he hasn't been the worst player in the bullpen so far.

Ditto for Ryan Flaherty.

Absolutely. Brach, Hunter, Wright . None of them have been effective. Garcia is the least of our worries. At least right now.

Maybe keeping Hunter and Matusz is more of a problem then keeping the rule 5 guy

I think H & M will be fine, but you're absolutely right. Hunter especially has been pretty bad since day one of ST. And most of the starts not going deep is an even bigger problem. Garcia has been pretty impressive. Least of our problems.

To the OP, I think you're trying too hard. "Carrying a Rule 5 guy" is just the phrase that is used. No hidden agenda.

The issue with Garcia is that Buck is going to try to avoid putting him in tough spots until he gets his feet wet. I agree the other pitchers are bigger concerns right now but the more those guys struggle the more they will need out of Garcia.
