I almost forgot that Jordan Baker was the umpire who received some media attention (and criticism) back in 2013 for his habit of throwing wads of chewing gum into the outfield after every inning...

I had not ehard about that. Guy sounds like a real jackass. Tribute to the game?

Ubaldo won't face any more punishment from this non incident.
However, sometimes pitchers do get fine or suspended because of umpires' judgments that they intentionally hit a batter. I do remember reading sometime last year, in a different Ubaldo thread that Ubaldo, in his more immature days a few years ago, got suspended for 7 games because it was judged that he intentionally hit a batter. Maybe he still has some sort of reputation from that incident and Jordan Baker had read the stories. I truly do not think that Ubaldo intentionally hit Panda. He is a lot more mature. Plus hitting a batter while pitching a no-hitter with 2 outs in a 1-0 lead makes no sense at all.

So he isn't a rookie umpire?

Baker's actually been in the league for a few years. I've seen him in several games.

There is the chance that he was just filling in as a call up from the minors at the start of his career, but I think he's been active on a regular basis at least since 2013, when the bubble gum criticism first got some attention.
