I thoroughly enjoyed Big Baby getting tossed

They should make the call and explain the call, that is it. If what Alomar said was true - that Hirshbeck said something racial about his mother - that would be way out of line. It wouldn't justify what Alomar did, but it's still inserting yourself into the game unnecessarily. The same is true of the umpire's gesture to Ortiz. Ortiz had dropped the bat, but he didn't get into the fact of the home plate umpire until the third base umpire yelled at him and made the gesture.

Respect is a two way street. Ortiz can't repeatedly act like a baby and show up the umpire, and by extension the game of baseball without repercussions. As much as I hate umpires inserting themselves into the game, this is not that. I have seen umpires start stuff with players, Angel Hernandez, Joe West, CB Bucknor, Bob Davidson. Ortiz forced the umpire's hand.

Sadly MLB.com didn't show the start of the situation which was in the 1st inning.

What angered me most was the Fenway faithful chanting "Papi...Papi..." after he got ejected. How can you honestly support such bad sportsmanship? There are children watching this man drop his bat in the batters box after receiving a call from the ump, and they are listening to supportive fans' reaction.

The entire organization and city of Boston should be ashamed. And they certainly shouldn't express any shock when their little leaguers start to exhibit Papi-like disrespect towards authority.

I'm certainly glad Oritz got tossed, he's one of my least favorite players. But... well... ummm... how many standing ovations did Earl get over the years from his tantrums? I think I recall Earl getting tossed 96 times in his career, and I'd bet he got strong fan support from the roughly 48 that happened at Memorial Stadium.

Earl was ejected 94 times and only made it to 3 on the top 15 list of ejected managers.

Earl also only managed about 16 seasons. I'm sure his rate of ejections is ranked far higher than his total number.

Bobby Cox ranks 1 with 161 and an average rate of once every 27.96 games.

Earl at 2,541 and 94 ejections, is once every 36.9 games.

Whether you believe it has any real impact, getting tossed to fire up the team is part of the manager's job. It isn't part of a player's job, especially in the fifth inning of a competitive game.

I was kinda of hoping to see some fire from Buck and light up the umps for that bonehead ejection of Ubaldo's the other game.

I can't imagine any other player in baseball not getting a suspension after a tantrum like the one we witnessed yesterday. Intimidating, bumping, and getting in the umps face. Imagine one of our guys doing that!

Little leaguers can't directly imitate a manager getting tossed.

Palmer said a little more in an email to ESPN:

“Who needs a home plate umpire when David's at the plate?" Palmer wrote in his e-mail Monday. “He's always complaining about close pitches. What I found objectionable was that the Red Sox are playing an important series -- game tied, fifth inning -- and his actions get him tossed.

“This game is about winning. What did he do yesterday to help the Sox win? Was there any redeeming or positive outcome from his actions? Only for the Orioles.

“How long would a pitcher last on the mound if he had the same histrionics as Ortiz had yesterday? I'm not his judge and jury. I was tweeting about his conduct yesterday, which, in my opinion, is indefensible."
