O's should make May 11 game a second opening day (or some such thing)

In contrast to the no-fan game last Wednesday, which sent a sad message to the rest of the country that Baltimore was not a safe place to watch a major sporting event, ReOpening Day is intended to show the world that Baltimoreans are still proud of their city, and are determined to move forward and make it a better place to live.

There is, however, some momentum building. The event has its own Facebook event page (ReOpening Day in Baltimore) that has 1,400 commits and 4,200 invites so far, a Twitter handle (@ReOpeningDay) and support from many of the businesses around the ballpark. There is no official tie-in with the Orioles, but they aren't going to argue with anyone trying to sell out their ballpark on a Monday night against a team that isn't normally a huge draw.

"It seems like very much a grassroots effort," Orioles vice president of marketing and communications Greg Bader said. "We certainly wouldn't discourage someone from doing that. It's a great thing … a great idea. It looks like the intent is 100-percent pure, to have a unifying experience. We're happy to be here for that."

Perhaps under different circumstances, the team might have jumped on this bandwagon and helped promote the event, but the last thing the Orioles want to do during this tough time in Baltimore is appear to be taking advantage of a tragic situation for promotional purposes.

Lots of good stuff in there about the similarity to Fantastic Fans Night (which was what inspired me to start this thread) as well. Should be a great night.

Hope you get a lot of people. I know some people who still will not go downtown at night. Especially with the kids.

I live downtown. It is fine. It is always fine. The most dangerous part of going downtown for people outside the city is the risk of being hurt or killed in a car accident on the drive to and from your house.

Looking forward to Monday!

Looking forward to it. I switched my tickets to the 5/11 game from the 5/3 game yesterday. It'll be my 3-year-old's first night game. Don't imagine we'll stay past the third or fourth inning, which will keep him well up past his bed time anyhow, but it seemed like a good thing, so we're doing it.

I switched tickets in my 29 game plan to the 5/11 game and now I can't go. They're 36 dollars plus fees at the box (i think) but I got them for cheaper as part of the plan. If anyone is interested, I'm happy to part with them for $25 a piece. I can meet this weekend in the Richmond area or we can do it electronically. Thanks.

Section 27 row 9, two tickets

I spent five minutes looking at the available ticket map for tonight's game. There are a little more than 10,000 upper deck seats available, around 2,500 club level seats available and a little more than 10,000 lower level seats available. Capacity is about 46,000, so the number of tickets sold as of now is about 23,000. Assuming the weather holds off, I would expect a decent walkup, but the crowd will still fall well short of 30,000. Decent crowd for a Monday in May against Toronto, and the Reopening Day thing will have an impact, but not to the extent that it will resemble even a weekend game.

Disappointing :(

But of course, I can't make time to go so I can't complain.

    • What a great example of pedantic! Please tell us you meant to do that. I honestly can’t tell these days.
    • Well it certainly doesn't look like he'll be winning Rookie of Year award. And if we send him down for like the tiniest amount of time, we get him for another year, right? I think if this poor hitting continues it's financial mismanagement not to send him back down. Grayson got sent down and came back way better.
    • He certainly isn't a bust but I wasn't happy with the pick at the time and I don't love using the second overall pick for that type of player profile. Westburg signed for slot so he's irrelevant but Mayo was a great use of the money saved.
    • Think Heston will be the next call up. Mayo’s K/BB ratio is poor and I think they’ll want to see that even out. Stowers and Norby have seen their numbers slip a bit.  It will likely take an injury to an outfielder or first baseman, but I think we see HK next.
    • I have to laugh at some of my pre-draft thoughts as well as others. I will say on behalf of myself and some others is that what we did not understand then was what the Orioles brain trust knew to be their model, and what they best developed. What traits they were looking for is an important thing to know, in hindsight anyway. And really, the Jackson Holliday leap in development was not something most of us heard anything about until about a month before the draft. I saw him the previous summer and I cannot say he was all that impressive, but it was only one look. His physicality took a big jump after that.  I will also add that we’re never going to know what would have happened if they drafted Austin Martin, Jones, Lawler, Lacy, etc. Their development could well have been different as O’s. The funny part of this board, in general, is the absolute certainty some have in their opinions and how eager they are to trash Elias and staff. There is plenty of humility to go around, now that things have played out. It’s fun to finally have a truly great front office and ownership group, and a stacked stable of horses.
