Steve Pearce at 2B

Great post and makes a ton of sense.

Great analysis as usual.

Question: Navarro has looked impressive so far. What are your thoughts on him now that you have seen a larger sample size?

Side note: as another poster said, it shows you what they think of Paredes' defense. Can't this guy play 1st and OF?

I like Navarro. But he is just in the majors until Hardy and Flaherty get healthy and ready to play. By this time next week it looks like Navarro will be back with the Tides.

The O's are very deep in middle infielders. Hardy, Schoop, Flaherty, Cabrera, Navarro and now Pearce. Pearce is the only one that will be eligible to be a FA this coming off season. He shouldn't be that expensive and the O's could extend him. Just have to see how many years he wants to stay and if that matches up with the O's opinion.

So the point is that Navarro, though he is good, may be trade bait some time in the future after everyone is healthy. Navarro looks like he could help some team at the major league level.

As far as Paredes goes, let's not get ahead of ourselves. He has never hit like this in the majors. Its a question of how long it take for the league to adjust to him and whether he can adjust back. I am fine with him just DHing for now. Keep hitting the ball Jimmy.

I doubt he sees much time in the field in the near term. But Buck has two great coaches that can teach fielding. Kirby in the outfield and Dickerson in the infield. I would not be surprised if in the next year the O's find a spot for him other than DHing.

Its just not in the cards in the near term.

All this is JMO.

I posted this is the lineup thread this morning but I believe it belongs in this discussion:

So what is the Pearce to 2B thing all about? Here is my take.

Its about keeping Paredes and Lough on the team.

The O's normally have a SS, a 2B and a utility infielder on the roster. Right now they have Cabrera at SS, Narvarro at 2B and no real utility infielder. Buck has determined that Paredes is a DH not a utility infielder. I think most of us will agree.

So Hardy and Flaherty come back. Cabrera and Navarro get sent down. There is still no a utility infielder. Not if the O's keep Lough and Paredes on the roster.

So using Pearce at 2B gives the O's three middle infielders. Hardy, Pearce and Flaherty. Flaherty can play anywhere in the infield.

I think Buck is just trying Pearce out at 2B to see if this idea works.

I think this is about right. This lets Paredes stay at DH to give him a chance to hit his way onto the team without taking ABs away from Pearce. It comes down to Pearce vs. Paredes at 2B and Buck must really not trust Paredes at all.

When JJ comes back who knows what happens. Maybe they trade Paredes to someone who wants his bat.

Why would they trade Parades. This team needs his bat. And you won't get much value for him.

I think it will be interesting to see if Pearce plays 2B after Flaherty is back.
I think there is no chance of that. Schoop will be back around the ASB. Until then it's Pearce/Navarro until Flash returns. Flash and Pearce might platoon until Schoop is back.

Schoop aims to be back around that all-star break. The chances of him being back then are very up in the air. Not a minor injury.

No matter, Flaherty will be the primary 2B once he returns, until Schoop does, whenever that is. Once Hardy comes back Cabrera will be the UTIF.

Vs lefties Pearce can probably be used at 2B or LF. But I am sure Pearce will see more playing time than that.

Don't laugh too hard. In the 2nd half if Schoop is back, the O's may trade Navarro. Let's say Navarro goes to AAA next week and he hit well for the Tides. He could be attractive to a pennant contender if they lose a middle infielder to injury. And if its doesn't happen in the 2nd half it may happen over the winter.

Did you read your own post? First you say there is no chance. And then say their might be a platoon

We signed the guy as a minor league free agent. He hasn't done much in the first month to change his perception. Sure we might get a spare part for the AAA team but he is more likely to be claimed off waivers when he is DFaed for his roster spot.

i don't think the O's DFA him. If they need space Gamboa will be taken off the roster IMO. When Wieters is ready Lavarnway gets DFA creating space of the 40 man.

I think Navarro will hit when sent back to AAA. That plus his defense, options, low salary and age will make him tradable IMO. He was in demand this past winter on a minor league contract. The O's got him by offering him a major league contract. I think he is ready to take the next step, produce at AAA and make himself more valuable.
