Nope.

The best way to go is: Target game changing prospect(s) and go all in blowing past the cap. Pay the penalties and go small the next two seasons.

But that is something we know won't happen here.

I agree. I was talking about an org that has an aversion to int'l spending. Incremental steps. If you have the scouting apparatus, the cash, the plan and the prospects like Sano, Mazara or the Brazilian version of Bryce Harper, then I say go for it!

The Brazilian version of Bryce Harper is playing football. ;)

Who are the successful teams that do this?

Well considering that the cap has only been in place a couple of years the sample size is small and the players in question are not in the majors at this point you can't call any of them successful at this time..

The Red Sox blew up their budget for Moncada. The Yankees signed 21 players for somewhere near $12 million last July. So there are two of them in the O's division.

We need to be rooting hard for an international draft. At least DD got something for nothing. Like I said a few pages back, he's basically a Tarpley replacement. Same age, similar draft position.

Frederick has used 19 pitchers so far this year. Lee would be the youngest pitcher we have at Frederick. Which is where I see him going. I'd say he's in our top 20.

That's sad, because he's not young for high A ball. He'll be 23 in August.

Not confirmable (yet) because teams don't talk about it but it would not surprise me if the progressive clubs are moving towards promoting players (outside of phenoms) later and focusing on developing them for use in their "peak years" with the understanding they aren't going to sign them long term and want the best years to be under team control. If I am correct in that thinking, the calculus used in making the determination as to who you push and who you sculpt for a four to five year productive period would be complex.

That is intriguing. So would that mean defense first types would be fast-tracked since defense peaks early?

So is it that Orioles ownership does not believe in giving this kind of money to 16- and 17-year-old kids or is the philosophy driven by Dan Duquette? Or is it something else?

No. Dan Duquette did not bring this philosophy to the Orioles. In Peter Angelos' mind Andy MacPhail saved this franchise. And Andy hated the Pelotera. And Andy told Peter they were never 16.

    • So since Westburg is apparently still ROY eligible, Cowser and Westburg may project to be the best rookie combination since Fred Lynn and Jim Rice in 1975?
    • There were several and I was one them. I'm  on record as saying I was one of his biggest Apologists . You should feel good about yourself as you were able to see that Means would be imploding before our very eyes( which was an opinion or a guess, which is what I did) as far as feeling bad for me? Dont I'm plenty good enough to know I wont be able to guess right every time
    • Fantastic pickup by Elias and big kudos to O’Hearn for taking advantage of the resources to improve. He’s a great story.
    • Given his injury history and what’s happening right now, Means may make more money as an Oriole next year than as a free agent. He may have to settle for league minimum as a FA but would do better than that in arbitration. Heck, unless he’s effective at least a little this year then the orioles might release him after the season to avoid paying more than league minimum. I hope Means recovers, very much so, but this scenario is possible imo.    ps. I guess I ignored the part where you said if Means thinks he is healthy.
    • What I'd like to see in the next game Holliday plays, is for him to keep his eyes following through on the ball when he swings. In the last game I saw, he was yanking his head off the zone when he swung and couldn't see the bat to the ball. He was missing wildly and it wasn't even competitive. So, keep your eye on the ball! Follow all the way through! If your swing is so violent that it's yanking your head off the sight of the ball, then adjust your mechanics because you can't hit what you can't see!
    • What a great example of pedantic! Please tell us you meant to do that. I honestly can’t tell these days.
