Talking Bandwagon and Fair Weather fans

I've been a diehard O's fan since birth. I don't live in MD, but remember watching the O's on HTS and making the trip up once a summer. My first game was the 97 ALDS where we knocked the Mariners out of the playoffs. First game I ever went to not only did I get to see multiple HOFers but also met a high up at Legg Mason and was sitting in the skybox by the 7th inning, an awesome memory for an 8 year old kid. I don't miss a game, I follow all of the affiliates, and attend over 30 minor and major league games a year.

I had to say that to say this: I have been looking at this site for a year now and have yet to post or even make a name til recent. I have never understood the "Fair-weatherness" of our fans, nor the extreme band wagon fans we have. When we're bad they can't give tickets away, if we're not 10 games above .500 most people on this site are ready to abandon ship! Guys don't you have faith in our squad and Buck?

Our starting pitching is stacked right now, our worst starter could be some teams #3 guy. We have arms coming up and some that have just arrived.

I want to see more faith from you guys and BACK THESE BIRDS!

There is a difference between realizing what the problem with the team is, being completely negative, looking at things positively, and then being a straight up homer like what i bolded.

The inconstancies of this team can be beyond frustrating.

Welcome to the OH!

I understand what you're saying, but to be honest, I've rarely seen bandwagon people on the OH. Much of the board is composed of a lot of long-time fans who've been here since the very bad years.

Even the newer folks seem to be even-handed.

You might be reacting to the deep - and diametrically opposed - chasms of belief that exist on here about the best ways to improve the team. It can get nasty, but I do feel we're all passionate and in here for the long term.

There's a lot I hate about the Orioles front office, but I love the team.

Don't confuse fair debate (or the permanent contingent of The Sky Is Falling) with being fair weather fans or bandwagon. That's frankly a little insulting. 95% of the posters on here are as hard core as bedrock. Some people just have a black world view and some have a white view. People come in all shapes and sizes.

What team doesn't have trouble selling tickets when they're bad? The Orioles still out-attended a bunch of teams in the league even when we had 14 straight losing seasons. And how do we have extreme bandwagon fans? LOL Are you sure you didn't mean to post that on Sons of Sam Horn?

They have a waiting list I think. :P

"Our worst starter could be another teams 3rd?" Or you could say, "our ace (Tillman) would probably be most good teams 3rd." That's not being fairweather.

A fairweather fan is someone who only cares when the team is winning. You can make the case that if you don't get mad, you're a fairweather fan. This team hasn't won since 83 and they were on the cusp of going to the WS last year and they made absolutely no effort to get better IMO. Should I have just shrugged my shoulders and say, oh well? Like many others, I was pissed.

It's not being fairweather, it's that we all want to win BADLY!!!

So if my math is correct you are 26 years old? Nothing wrong with that but I think most of us on here are just a little bit older which gives us "experience". :)

But having said that I have only been an Oriole fan and season ticket holder since 2011. My wife on the other hand is a life long fan since the late 60's.

And I doubt Bud would be anyone's #3.

Just my .02 cents

Edit: And like another poster mentioned if we are not at the game we watch them on tv.

Scott, speaking of shapes and sizes, who is the avatar you been sporting.... she's messing with my reading comprehension. :P

    • I agree with this. I just feel like he hasn't been given a fair shot in two seasons up here. I can't see any reason that he can't start 4 games out of 7. Give Hays, Mullins, Santander and Cowser each one day off a week and let him start.
    • This is probably obvious to many but I have not seen it talked about. With Bradish going on the IL and the recall of reliever Vespi they are now in a 5 man rotation.    Burnes, GRod, Irvin, Suarez and Povich.    And an 8 man pen. It was hoped that Kremer would join the rotation but his short 3 2/3 innings in Sunday's start at Norfolk probably means he gets another start in Norfolk on Friday.    If he does well at that point he could join the O's on June 26th.    Until then the O's are likely to continue with a 5 man rotation IMO.   Even if Kremer joins the rotation in June the O's probably go back to a 5 man rotation in July because of the number of off days in July.
    • Some may feel that way, but I'm wishing that they would have landed them both. Even before the injuries the starting pitching was going to be a little light next season... it's possibly going to be brutal now. Either way, I'm going to enjoy 24 before worrying about next season.
    • That barrel% regression is really surprising. I haven't looked into his repertoire or to see if there is some difference in how he's pitching, but that's a crazy drop off.  I wanted him and was willing to give up Westburg for him before the Burnes trade. I'm glad I'm not the Orioles GM now! lol Saying that, I do think the Orioles may have gotten a bit better out of him. Plus, out of those last seven starts, he's really only pitched poorly twice including the last game where he allowed seven runs to balloon his ERA.  With all the injuries we've head, I still wouldn't be upset with him in the rotation now. But if Suarez can keep it up and start getting through 6 more often, he's basically what we had hoped Cease would have been for us.
    • You've never really been a Stowers guy and have always put a huge emphasis on K-BB ratio. While I agree that K-BB ratio can be important, I believe you had misgivings with Mountcastle as he moved up the chain for the same reason. Stowers is always going to have a lot of miss, but he's not getting much regular playing time and pinch-hitting against relievers is not normally a time to work pitchers so I'm not surprised he's been more aggressive. I still think if Stowers was given 500 PAs he's going to hit 25-30 bombs and put up an OPS north of .780. And I think he's improved his defense enough that I would feel ok with him in LF in Camden Yards.
    • I'm talking about the tone.  It's like they are gleeful that Cease is going through a rough patch.
    • Mullins is a guy that has very little chance of getting an extension or a large contract from anyone. He makes sense as a 4th outfielder type on a team with a right-handed hitting CF, something the Orioles won't have unless Jud Fabian just completely turns it on.  I have to imagine this will be Mullins last year with the Orioles, which should move Cowser into center opening up left field for Stowers next year.
