Why's it always worse case scenario when bringing up options to replace Gary? Why does it always have to be Bob Wade pt. 2? I'd assume Debbie Yow would have a big part in the hiring of the next coach, and she doesn't seem to be too bad a judge of coaching talent. With all that Maryland has to offer, you'd think they could lure in a top young coaching talent like an Anthony Grant from VCU.

It's a risk I'd rather not take. Must be nice to root for a great program with a great coach.

I just feel that when considering Gary Williams entire body of work, an 8-8 season in the ACC with a really young team isn't worth getting worked up about.

As for your second point, yes, it's great. But you guys have a great coach too. He's proven that for many years, just not with this team...yet.

What in the world does this have to do with whether UNC and UCLA missed their legendary coach when he left (which was the original point THAT YOU BROUGHT UP)? You switched horses in mid-stream when it became clear you were wrong in your original point.

Following arguments is fun. I find it hard to believe that UNC missed Dean Smith after Guthridge got them to two FFs in three years, but that's just me.

Of course people will miss Wooden. Considering he's maybe the best coach in sports history (certainly the most successful) it would be fairly hard not to miss him. However, UCLA was able to continue to at least enjoy some moderate level of success.

Again, get me a new guy in here that can:

A) Recruit, particularly in an area like Bmore/DC that is a hoops hotbed.

B) Motivate his teams so that they don't constantly play at the level of their opponent.

And I'll take the chance that he will somehow fair better than 3 NITs in 4 years.

Lol, yea ok.

And no, star pitcher, I haven't playd basketball professionally or even in high school. But that doesn't mean I can't speak intelligently on the subject.

My whole point here is that going from Gary to another coach doesn't mean the program will tank right away. On the contrary, other teams have moved on from long-tenured coaches and enjoyed some level of success -- at least more success than MD is "enjoying" right now.

I would have thought Kentucky would have been better this year. Indiana saw down years after the initial success of Mike Davis. Uggh, the Matt Doughetry years at UNC. UCLA had a run of miserable coaching in the 80s-90s (except the cheating Harrick). Georgetown, wow did they crash post JT. UNLV ... where has that program been since Tark the cheater?

Replacing a HOF coach isn't easy. The Terps would likely be fine in the long term, but there would sure be a transition period.

That's another point that I was going to make at some point. It's silly to assume that the replacement for Gary will be some former member of the Keystone Cops.

Maybe some up-and-comer would embrace the chance to coach a once prestigious program -- something Gary seems to have taken for granted.

Anthony Grant. Travis Ford. Scott Drew (Baylor). These would be my first three choices. Again if Gary walked away of his own accord.

On the contrary, the examples you gave occurred not immediately after the previous legend's tenure ended.

The transition period at most of those schools went ok.

May God strike me down for saying this but IF Gary was to leave for whatever reason, Mike Brey would be a good replacement. Did a great job at Delaware, turned Notre Dame into a legit Sweet 16 type team year after year, knows the area, and has a decent pedigree as an ex Duke assistant.

Just a thought.

Why would Brey leave ND to come here?

Well, yes Guthridge took Dean's teams to the final four. When his recruits became the go to guys it wasn't quite as good. Davis, again, they were Knight's guys and he didn't get it done when they were his guys. Same thing at Georgetown. You just don't know what you are going to get. I agree that we could get some young stud that turns us into a perennial top 10, but the chances of that happening aren't great.
