I certainly have not noticed it before. As I said before. I just sat anticipating the home run. Never paid attention to his personal tics.

Yeah I'm not saying he wasn't using something, just that I certainly didn't see anything on his arm. This wasn't like Pineda who had gobs of black crap on his arm and neck or Bucholz with a blob of shiny white on his arm. I saw nothing on Matusz.

Bucholz has the product in those greasy locks. He does more than get a grip.

I've noticed it, but whatever he's doing isn't helping. Pitchers used to spit on balls, wouldn't sweat have the same effect? Matusz sweats alot, so maybe he is using something. It wasn't obvious though. Either way, to call that out was a bush league move by a desperate team.

I agree with you completely.

Most use a mixture of pine tar and resin with some kind of sun screen.

You don't use pine tar with resin and sunscreen. Pine tar is its own thing. So stop saying pine tar was used. Pine tar on the forearm would stick out like a sore thumb. It was sunscreen and rosin which is industry standard.

According to Jim Kaat rosin is a variant of pine tar. Stop trolling.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosin

Good for Jim Kaat but he's wrong. They two very different things.

Rosin is a form of Resin (natural compound) which is dried out and has it's terpene components removed. Rosin is transparent or translucent (you pick the word). Pine tar is created by heating up pine wood under pressure and isn't transparent or even translucent as the burning process causes creates carbon bonding. Pine Tar is Blackish-brown in color. It is phsyically impossible to have pine tar on your skin and it not show up as a blob of dark matter. It's also soluable with water which rosin is not.

So you can see the difference in a photo:

Sunscreen and Rosin usage: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CFk8kSDWEAE1DxR.jpg

See the difference? Pine Tar is dark and sticks out. Sunscreen and rosin is translucent.

They are two different forms of pine sap. "Resin, in the most specific meaning of the term, is a hydrocarbon secretion of many plants, particularly coniferous trees."

If MLB was smart they would do everything to give the hitters an advantage, not the pitchers.

Obviously anything that allows more grip will allow more control for the pitcher and thus more movement. Jim Palmer even said it himself last night and I would imagine he would know a little bit about pitching.

What would you suggest MLB do to give hitters an advantage?

I believe that pitchers on just about every team are using a combination of ingredients to improve their grip on the ball.

My belief is that most players and managers are ok with it because it improves the pitchers grip and makes it less likely for a hitter to be maimed with a 90 plus MPH fastball. MLB needs to do something with two pitchers being suspended for using illegal substances in a matter of weeks.

I don't know what MLB is going to do, however, my suggestion is that they use a standardized product if they are going to allow pitchers to use something to improve their grip.

Further, since you brought it up, what does Jim Palmer think about the subject other than the obvious that you state?

Resin when transformed into Rosin is removed of all it's sticky qualities. Pine tar is not.

It's the difference between chalk and limestone. Limestone might be the origin but chalk is the weakest form of limestone.

Matusz should take a tip from Billy Martin. He advised his pitchers to put their foreign substance on the crotch of their unis. Players frequently go there to adjust their cup and no umpire(except maybe Angel Hernandez) would be seen inspecting that area for sticky stuff. True story. :laughlol:
