The hype is a little thick here wouldn't you say?

Get him, and they finally have a classic leadoff hitter who can steal 60 bases, approach a .400 on-base percentage, hit for some power and flash leather. Get him, and they have Jerome Walton in 1989 and Bob Dernier in 1984, both magical seasons. Get him, and they're good enough to challenge the Mets and Diamondbacks and dream about playing the Yankees or Red Sox or Tigers in October.

Don't get him? Well, Ryan Theriot is your leadoff hitter, Mark DeRosa is your second baseman. And serviceable as both players are, not to mention popular, 100 years without a World Series title probably becomes 101.

I hope Jimmy Hendry feels this way. If so, we'd have a lot more coming than we've been offered to date.

Just a small update to the Brian Roberts saga. Timmy was on Mike & Mike on ESPN radio this morning. We learned that he is really hairy. He also made a comment about the Cubs. I can't remember what the exact quote was now at this point. I believe it was something along the lines of "I don't know if it gets done" in reference to Roberts to the cubs. Kind of contrary to what everyone else is saying that it's going to get done soon.

The most interesting thing in the article to me is:

"We want to keep Soriano nice and healthy and strong all year,'' Piniella said. ``It seems to me, out of the leadoff spot, he'll want to do too much, run too soon. Out of the two hole, it might be easier for him not to have to run as much. My point is, it's for his own good. And for the team's good, because having him in that lineup is important to us."

This is actually a quote from Lou. He wants to save Soriano's leg. If that is true then Roberts as a leadoff hitter might be what Lou does wants.

How has Jay Mariotti kept his job for so long and gained so much notoriety? He is such a blatantly pathetic excuse for a journalist. I have never read a column of his that didn't have some kind of factual error in it that a reasonably intelligent and responsible high school journalism 101 student would have corrected.

He didn't comment immediately, which triggered memories of his flat denial in 2006 when Jason Grimsley told federal agents that Roberts once used. But he did come clean five days after the Mitchell Report.

Yup, professional, paid journalists continue to cite a fabricated story that has been proven to be completely false. On top of that he's wrong on the details of the discredited report he's citing. The state of the media in this nation is truly a disgrace. There are good journalists out there, but it seems the public often prefers to read the work of complete and total hacks with chips on their shoulders who are much more interested in advancing some sort of agenda than reporting the news or advancing intelligent discourse.

Jay Mariotti makin me mad!

I don't mean to get in the way of another BBA picking of nits and mole hill mountains, but correct me if I'm wrong...wouldn't it be the editors job to catch factual errors before it goes to print?

It's the editor's job to fact check every article in a daily newspaper? I don't think so. I *think* that most of the fact checking is left up to the "journalist." Editors determine placement, length of content, some headlines, etc.

I highly, highly doubt it was an unintentional mistake. Mariotti has been know to lie in his column with regularity whenever it suits his agenda and it's not really plausible to think that a baseball columnist and steroid crusader failed to hear the widely reported fact that the Grimsley affidavit was unsealed and the names in it were not the ones reported by the LA Times.

Alright, explain the agenda/conspiracy for saying it was Grimlsey instead of Larry Bigbie?

The Watergate Hotel has wireless internet, by the way...it's pretty cool here.
