I'm thinking it's Alvarez time and that Lough is gone. I could see Alvarez slashing 270/300/400 and playing +defense in LF/RF. Lough could probably fetch us another teams top 30 prospect. Since the beginning of the year he's acquired O'Brien, Rowen, Lee, Boston guy.

Hard to imagine he wouldn't have greater offensive upside than Lough at this point and that he could not potentially be as good or better in RF (based on what I've heard). Then again, I have not seen Alvarez play, only seen stats and heard things at this point.

Arm is great, speed is average to below average. He won't be as good as Lough defensively due to lack of range. Why is it hard to imagine he wouldn't have more offensive upside? He isn't young and he's OPSing .657 at AAA. Lough had some pretty decent minor league numbers that were well in line with Alvarez. I see Alvarez as being a potential .700ish OPS bat with above average defense. Which is basically David Lough, minus the elite defense and speed.

I don't know much about Alverez so I won't comment on him, but I agree with everything you say about Lough. As much as Buck loves his defense, I honestly don't understand why Lough doesn't get more playing time.

The only thing I can see is because the team is slumping so bad, maybe Buck is looking for as much offense as he can get. If the rest of the team was hitting as expected/hoped, I believe Buck with go with the best defender in Lough in left and I truly believe he would hit enough to earn the starting gig.

I'm with you on this. Unless its a definitive upgrade, I'm of the mindset of keeping Lough. Neither Alvarez or Reimold meets that criteria simply because they are not center fielders.

Again, I have not seen Alvarez play but the skillsets sound to me like Alvarez is more suited for RF and Lough is more suited for LF. In this case we're clearly looking at Alvarez to be a right fielder.

Lough has a ML 89 OPS+ in 656 PA's. That generally being platooned/selective playing time. His minor league numbers were inflated by PCL and good years with high babips'. I have seen nothing to suggest that Lough is a full time player or even a platoon player. Nor do i think it's a very good idea to bank Lough's production based on defense. Alvarez has played in Norfolk and has a Cuban background. He did fine last year and got off to a slow start this year. It looks to me like he has BA skills and some power. Now Alvarez may very well flame out badly, but lets just say I find it hard to fathom that Alvarez does not have more offensive upside than Lough at this point.

Does he make boneheaded plays? Will he run into outs? Will he throw to the wrong base? Will every play be an adventure?

Those may be Buck's first questions at this point.

Bill Ripken was on Scott G's show the other afternoon and had this to said.

Every player including him and Cal Jr, has done stupid things as a player, losing track of outs and stuff. You get over and try not to let it happen, but it does, and you can only beat yourself up over.

he talked about his own blunder, he pulled a double play at 2nd, getting the 2nd of two outs, and didnt brother to throw to first to get the runner, he rolled the ball to the pitcher's mound and started to jog off the field.

    • Love the Harvey trade idea. I didn't realize just how good he has been over the last 2+ years
    • Well if he's as good as Todd Helton was, he won't be down any list of our best hitters, unless we are employing the AL Allstar team. I'm not sure how familiar that you are with who Todd Helton was. But he was a career .316 hitter with a .414 on base and a .953 OPS. Of course he played his home games at Coors, but that is still kind of like amazingly awesome.
    • I remember listening to a podcast, I think it was on Steve Cohen, where a whistleblower ran the numbers on his hedge funds and basically said that the returns he was getting were mathematically impossible.  Like there was no way someone could be that good at their job.  He was ignored but turns out he was right as the books were being cooked in a big way. I think about the same thing sometime with how this team has drafted, like I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop because there's no way they could be this good.
    • I was speaking about replicating production this season when the goal is to win a World Series for the 1 season that we have Corbin Burnes. I hope you’re right that the accumulation of talent is too big to go wrong, but I am a much more cautious. I like where Cowser and Westburg are at, but I’ll need to see it for more than 3 weeks (though I have always had less doubts about Cowser). I’ll also need to see it from others as they get promoted. As much as I believe that Mayo is going to be elite, he still has to prove it. The track record right now is great, so I hope it continues.
    • A deal with Miami makes too much sense to get Scott back and also get one of their young SP. They have the worst offense in the NL and we have position players galore to trade back.
    • I agree with the concept of “unsung hero” It’s like when people are complaining about a failure, and they say, “you had ONE job!” Well, Mr. Mateo had one job, and he did it perfectly; and now he’s going to go back into the closet until the next time we need him to do his one job perfectly. That’s definitely worth something. @Fiver6565 said it best.
    • Let's hope that's an issue when he's available. I could see Hays doing an extended minor league rehab if the team is doing well and everyone is hitting.
