2015 9th (283) - Jaylen Ferguson - CF - Arlington HS (TX)

Recommended Posts

9 rounds in and no college hitters since DJ Stewart in the first. Orioles leaning heavy on prep hitters, especially power bats. Interesting approach. I like it.

I really like that we're taking high upside power bats; definitely a different approach from previous years. But this draft is really going to be a boom or bust draft class; if we get one or two of these HS hitters to be ML impact players then it's a great draft. But there's an equal chance none make the majors. I would have preferred one or two other college bats in the first 10 rounds, but I'm really excited to see how these hitters develop.

College bats past the first couple rounds rarely have any upside at all (with a handful of exceptions), and it's not like high floors make much of a difference after the firs round or so. I'm 100% on board with going heavy on upside after Stewart.

Athletic high school outfielder. Projection pick according to Mayo. 6'2", 180 pounds. Bats right. Committed to Grayson County CC.

Which means he will be an easy sign. I like going with the HS bats since most of college bats this year were really low profiles from what I've seen. Obviously HS bats are volatile, but at the same time, they carry the most upside.

Nathan Showalter was the area scout on this one and on Gray Fentor.
