Billy Rowell. I thought he was going to be a superstar. The worst part about that draft pick is the two picks directly after him were Tim Lincecum and Max Scherzer. Of all the years for the Orioles not to draft a pitcher, the Orioles picked the year when there were two stud aces available. That year and the 2005 draft when the Pirates and Reds snatched up Andrew McCutchen and Jay Bruce really burned my soul. The Orioles had to settle for Brandon Snyder who is a big downgrade over those guys.Winning all those meaningless games in September 2004 was very costly in the long run.

I think there is a pretty good chance they would have messed up Lincecum.

Matt Kemp, I was very willing to have the team eat that salary. He's not horrible batting .258 or whatever but I expected more in terms of power and what not

If 0.0 wins for $21M is "not horrible", how would you describe horrible? I didn't think this was possible, Kemp has actually been less productive than Ryan Howard in 2015.

...and the Dodgers say "thank you very much San Diego" and Justin Turner gets snubbed for the All Star team. :laughlol:

Speaking of which, anyone else wishing Justin Turner stuck with the Orioles about now?

You guys do realize that Jeffrey Hammonds still had 110 career home runs, right?

Yes, he did. His 8 win career is probably about average for an early first round pick. But he was also an advanced college guy, drafted #4 overall, and playing well in the majors a year later at the age of 22. But he really never improved from there. Career high in games played was 128, career high in fWAR was 2.4. Had an impressive-looking year with the Rockies in 2000 where he hit .335, but that was one of the most extreme hitters' environments in MLB history. People endlessly moan and wail about Matt Wieters just becoming a solid regular... well, Hammonds was about as highly regarded and he only played 100+ games in consecutive years once.

Yea you're right. I just don't ever look up WAR for players. Never have, probably will, just not today

You?

SIAP - I was so enamored with the name "Even On Coffee" that I really wanted him to turn out to be a special player. "He's a sleeper!"

Srsly have to say Brook Fordyce. Just because that felt like the most glaring trade (2-for-1) of the great Y2K purge. I wanted him to be worth it. Some might argue that he was.

    • Still with a chance to do this for the first time since 1982-83. Would be one more nice accomplishment for this organization.
    • The weird thing about our bullpen is that they rarely blow leads.   They have a 69% save rate, 4th highest in baseball.  They make it scary, but generally, when they have the lead, they get the job done.   Where they are really bad is keeping games close when we’re down a run or two, last night being a classic example of that.   This year’s team has 32 comeback wins, compared to 48 last year.   Why is that?   Part of it is obviously on the offense, but part of it is that the bullpen doesn’t keep us in striking distance when we’re behind.   One way you can tell this is by the W/L records of the starters and the bullpen.  Last year, the starters were 57-40, this year they’re 60-49.   The starter got the decision 12 more times this year than last year, including 9 more losses (with 3 games to play).   That tells you that when the team is losing when the starter is pulled, they keep losing.  Meanwhile, the relievers were 44-21 last year, 28-22 now. They’re not picking up wins because they don’t give the offense a chance to catch up and get the win for the bullpen guy.
    • I do not disagree with above posts.  Also I am pretty sure that this time last season, the Texas Rangers Hangout was saying the exact same things as the Rangers Pen.  Point being, you never know until you know.  The pen is shaky, but is capable of putting together a solid run from time to time.
    • Roster Resource thinks it has tonight's lineup and Kjerstad on bench again. He is 7 AB shy of 130 MLB regular season AB with 3 games left, and if he ends up short some prospect list makers may still label him one.    If still with the Orioles, he will be 26 years old by Sarasota. I think the OP has its answer as it has been Cole and Lopez these two nights and the team is preparing for that intensity.
    • I care I bet the over on 88 wins, looked like a lock now not so much, come on O’s, daddy needs some new shoes
    • I’d have brought up Young immediately after DFAing Kimbrel. Baker has no place on this club this year. Would have been nice to see Young up here.
    • Yeah, but they could've brought him up a month ago and seen what they might have...And Im not "pining" for Brandon Young, just wondering if he's any better than some we have in the pen..
