  1. 1. Would you sign Manny for 11/$231 mm?

    • Yes, sign him up today!
    • I'd do it, but only if Manny stays healthy the rest of 2015
    • No, too rich/risky for my blood

There are two problems with this as I see it. One, Manny has had two season ending injuries in the last two years. Two, if he turns out to be a tremendous bargain because we are smart enough to do this, would he stand for it or demand more money? I suspect the latter.

I suspect a trade off. He would accept less value to guarantee his arb years and a couple of FA years for security, but no longer. If the O's want to lock him up log term they will have to pay.

The same thoughts I expressed earlier in this thread. Fans, get it out of your head that Mr. Angelos is going to approve an A-Roid type contract for any baseball player. They tried that once with Albert Belle and it came back to "bite them on the butt". I'm not saying Angelos is a bad owner, just that he has learned from past experience. If Manny continues his solid season without any health issues I could see the O's offering him a contract extension similar to what they offered Adam Jones a few years ago (6years-88.5 million). With 2 rebuilt knees I think Manny would be foolish not to accept such an offer. JMHO.

The smart guy who knows everything. He said that Manny is a lot closer in value to Kyle Seeger than he is to Trout. post #99 http://forum.orioleshangout.com/forums/showthread.php/148727-Our-pending-free-agents/page7

Why take a personal shot at him?

I'd say Manny is about halfway between the two. The max salary I proposed ($25 mm) is 40% of the way between Seager ($19 mm) and Trout ($34 mm).

This is the same owner, that would never go more than 4 years and more than 10 million a year for starting pitching.

That went out the window, when Ubaldo was signed.

So dont say never.

There really is little comparison between Manny now and Jones when he signed his extension. Manny is 22 years old, and already has compiled 14.2 rWAR. When Jones was 22, he had a cumulative 2.9 rWAR. When he signed his deal, Jones had started his age 26 season and had compiled 11.0 rWAR to that point (14.8 by the end of that season). Jones even now has never exceeded 4.8 rWAR in a season; Manny was worth 6.7 rWAR in 2013 as a 20-year old, and is on pace for an 8.5 rWAR season now as a 22-year old. I like Jones, and I feel his deal has turned out to be a bargain, but we are never going to sign Manny to a deal like that.

I completely agree, there is just no way around the fact that Manny will not get less than 100M and he most likely will get closer to 200M than he will to 100M pending his health.

At some point you have to put your foot down and say this is a guy we will build around. I think Manny is that guy. He is an offensive weapon and his defense is elite. He has the type of game that will age well as he does not rely solely on speed or power.

His question marks are obviously his injury risk and management would have to make a decision on his long-term leadership potential, which none of us has the info to evaluate. So far the O's have shown a commitment to being picky about the players that they give long-term deals to, but they have generally chosen wisely. I think Manny should be the next guy.

Wasn't a lot of Belle's "lost contract value" off-set by insurance payouts?

    • Had a couple of base hits up the middle last night, one of which was off a 98 MPH fastball, so maybe he's starting to get his timing down.  He's still not driving the ball too much yet, but that will come. I think he's close to a breakout game.
    • I know that you know this but probably don’t care. But the facts are 2019 was A LONG TIME AGO. And his initial injury was now 2 years ago. I’m not sure how relevant those 2019 numbers are to the ineffective pitcher that he is right now. We waited on him all season last year and that didn’t prove to be wise. If we get something from him that will probably be a great bonus. But I hope that there is now a plan A that doesn’t include waiting for a now off injury pitcher to turn back into the player that he was 5 years ago.
    • This thread is eerily similar to Cowser discussion last year… at some point, it may become needed  to reset and go back down .. Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle are famous examples
    • You've been on quite the roll lately. The curmudgeony is starting to melt away! 🤣
    • I am guessing the extension only works when the player is rehabbing directly following recovery from surgery.   That was the case with Hernandez.  But in Means’ case, he pitched in four major league games, pretty effectively, after his 2023 rehab stint.  So I doubt this would count as a post-surgery rehab.  I guess we’ll find out.
    • He would have had an RBI double last night if the ball didn't get "stuck" under the wall. Kjerstad would have easily scored. I didn't get to see the entire game, unfortunately.  I did get to see Kjerstad with some really superb swing decisions. He looks pretty locked in. It's a shame about the myocarditis, still blows my mind that he's 25.
    • You had the same info we have now. You knew he missed the playoffs because of an injury.    You knew we had barely seen him since the TJ surgery.    And that was part of the point but you dismissed it.
