Adam Jones injury will be the news of the day

I have said for some time that Adam is the one guy we cannot afford to lose. If he has something of major significance going on (God forbid!), then I am turning into a seller if I am DD, because we are not winning anything in 2015 without Adam Jones, imho.

We can't afford to lose him long term. This is Lough's big chance.

I appreciate Lough's value more than most, but I am convinced he is a defensive specialist and 4th OF type who will remain that way for his career. I'll reiterate, that provides value especially when you're as good as he has shown for the past few years, a few shaky games notwithstanding.

It pushes back his return date if they do DL him. It could also cause Dan/Buck to wait out the injury instead of putting Adam on the DL. All for the rather dubious gain of having a guy with a gimped shoulder trying to swing a bat.

Yeah, frankly I was surprised at the move until they had confirmation there was nothing wrong.

Can we put odds on Friday? I say he goes on the DL on Thursday.

Can we put odds on Friday? I say he goes on the DL on Thursday.

Britt Ghiroli

“I don’t think I’ll go on the DL,” Jones said. “I don’t like the DL. But can’t play, it’s uncomfortable.”

Jones —who suffered the injury diving for a ball on Monday- was originally slated to play center field on Friday in Toronto. But, after testing his shoulder, he didn’t feel right and was a late scratch moved to designated hitter. Jones, who also served at DH Saturday, said that was the last time he tested throwing.

“I can move it. It’s just certain actions, lifting it,” said Jones, who won’t re-test his shoulder until he’s pain free. “The throwing motion is not too comfortable.”

Jones was more sore on Sunday than manager Buck Showalter had hoped thought he said he doesn’t believe the pair of DH’ed games set him back at all. He is coming off of back-to-back rest days as he didn’t play on Sunday and the team was off on Monday.

“You guys [in the media] have a good timeline,” Jones said when asked if a Friday return was most plausible. “But hopefully maybe Thursday, maybe Friday if I can throw, test it out. That’s the key. If I can throw, I’ll play.”

...

“It feels a lot better than it did coming into Sunday,” Jones said. “Just time, it’s the only thing I can do. I can take all this medicine and all this [stuff]. I just need time.”

“These guys count on me to be in there every day. I count on myself to be in there every day. Oriole fans, Showalter counts on me to be in there every day. It’s tough because I feel like I’m letting my teammates down. But they understand.”

I'm a lil perplexed why we haven't DL'd Jones yet. I get he doesn't like the DL and we would be best served to see if he can rest for a few days in hopes it gets better but he's been banged up all year and I really think a stint on the DL would serve him and the team well. Give him a chance to rest all that is bothering him. I was worried about his health before he "hurt" his shoulder diving for a ball.

I know our lineup isnt as strong without him in there but the guys filling in have been playing well and it gives us time to either evaluate them a little longer and/or showcase them for a trade. It would also provide a little roster flexibility in order to keep these guys in our organization a lil longer.

I think they are trying to rest him and get to the All-star break where he will have a week to recover but I still think it would have been best served to DL him before the Blue Jays series. That game DHing cost him a chance to come off the DL sooner and that was the only game we lost in Toronto.

Edit: Sorry, thought he only DH'd on Friday not both Friday and Saturday. Most of my points are still valid though..

If Buck can sit him on the bench for 12 days then use him for 3 he would prefer that to missing him for 15 days.

If he went on the DL, he'd be out until July 6. I'm not sure where the line is where you'd want to DL him, but I'd guess that if he still isn't ready by the time the team returns from Boston on Friday, they'd take a serious look at it.

Plus, his presence on the lineup card as a reserve could make an opposing manager think twice before bringing in a lefty.

    • Well it certainly doesn't look like he'll be winning Rookie of Year award. And if we send him down for like the tiniest amount of time, we get him for another year, right? I think if this poor hitting continues it's financial mismanagement not to send him back down. Grayson got sent down and came back way better.
    • He certainly isn't a bust but I wasn't happy with the pick at the time and I don't love using the second overall pick for that type of player profile. Westburg signed for slot so he's irrelevant but Mayo was a great use of the money saved.
    • Think Heston will be the next call up. Mayo’s K/BB ratio is poor and I think they’ll want to see that even out. Stowers and Norby have seen their numbers slip a bit.  It will likely take an injury to an outfielder or first baseman, but I think we see HK next.
    • I have to laugh at some of my pre-draft thoughts as well as others. I will say on behalf of myself and some others is that what we did not understand then was what the Orioles brain trust knew to be their model, and what they best developed. What traits they were looking for is an important thing to know, in hindsight anyway. And really, the Jackson Holliday leap in development was not something most of us heard anything about until about a month before the draft. I saw him the previous summer and I cannot say he was all that impressive, but it was only one look. His physicality took a big jump after that.  I will also add that we’re never going to know what would have happened if they drafted Austin Martin, Jones, Lawler, Lacy, etc. Their development could well have been different as O’s. The funny part of this board, in general, is the absolute certainty some have in their opinions and how eager they are to trash Elias and staff. There is plenty of humility to go around, now that things have played out. It’s fun to finally have a truly great front office and ownership group, and a stacked stable of horses.
    • How did the moustache work for Austin Hays?
    • Thanks for the kind words @HbgOsFan and thanks especially for reading them.
