Eduardo and the Afternoon Game

The Orioles will face Eduardo Rodriguez for the second time in his six major league starts, which again will have fans debating the wisdom of trading him last summer for left-hander Andrew Miller. And I'll refuse to join the fray today because I can't keep explaining the logic behind it and how life as a contender is different than life as a seller at the non-waiver deadline.

I hate this attitude. I think while we all agree that sometimes as a contender you have to sacrifice some future value for some present return, saying that there is no point in discussing whether giving up X was worth receiving Y is just pointlessly dismissive.

I am not sure, he meant, it's not worth discussing.

But, you have to admit, that sometimes people can go over the top or snarky when somebody disagrees with their opinion.

Not all contenders are the same. A rich team that is stacked with good prospects can afford to do things that a mid market team with a relatively thin system cannot. This should be obvious, without getting into the calculus of this particular trade.

I also think he means..........he's tired of discussing it week after week for the past 3 months or more. At some point there's not much more to say.

Especially when it is simply a conduit for lobbing obstacles in the general direction of the front office. Discussion of past and future trades are ways worth of intelligent comment. General trash talk not so much.

Right. Being a mid to small market team with little or nothing to dangle from an uninjured prospect perspective makes for a dull deadline.

I'm okay with the trade, have been, and always will be. You have to give up something to get something. While it hurts seeing him have success with a team in our division, I think him having success is not a bad thing for the Orioles. His success gives credibility that we have talent and are willing trade partners. As upset as any Oriole fan is now, there may come a day when Josh Hader presents the same feelings. No matter how bad Norris pitches this year, he did win 15 last year including a playoff game. You roll the dice and hope for the best. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and sometimes you push. Personally, I view these trades as wins for all parties involved.

Like Buck said, you have to give up something, to get something.

Like Buck said, you have to give up something, to get something.

But when you give up 1000+ innings of a cost controlled good starting pitcher for 20 innings of a relief pitcher who will be gone when the season is over, that decision is highly questionable. "You have to give up something to get something" is far too simplistic an equation. We've beaten this to death in other threads, so I don't want to get back into a full blown debate about it here, but simplistic statements like the one Roch made in the OP and the one you quote from Buck are not very illuminating.

We gave up a mid range, AA pitcher that was struggling, but talented pitcher.

And it remains to be seen, if he will be around for 1000+ innings.

If he was still here, he would probably still be here in AA and several other arms in the food chain between him and here.

Sorry, but I would make that trade again, over and over.

And I am sure, you wouldn't.

We just have to agree to disagree.

But, Roch is right, and see his blog comments and twitter feeds makes OH seem tame, the way people are still debating this issue.

    • There have been 2-3 times when it seemed logical to call him up but they don’t.   I’ve never understood this thing they have for Baker.  Hey, Cole Irvin is available again!!
    • While we lost some talented players, I think the consensus was some of the players we lost were actually blocking more talented prospects. The loss of Westburg and Urias should have been mostly offset by Holliday and Mayo. Instead, they were truly abysmal.  Povich had some nice moments but he was disappointing as well.  Maybe our expectations were too high - Elias is not going to hit on every prospect, and even the ones that turn out good may take a while to adjust. Still, I think it is fair to have expected more out of Mayo and Holliday since the organization deemed them ready to promote.  In addition to the prospects, you had Adley hit a wall, going from a 6 WAR pace to replacement level, and Cowser and O'Hearn both struggling.  Certainly injuries hurt us, but we should have been strong enough to overcome them. Maybe not to sustain a 105 win pace but I think it is fair to say we should have been able to beat 95 wins and win the division even with the injuries.
    • I was wondering what the knee-jerk reaction would be to an ugly game last night, but the truth is that the bullpen is fine, as is the rest of the team. We lack a true lockdown closer, but we have six arms by my count that are very good relievers in Akin, Perez, Coulombe, Webb, Cano, and Domingez. And you can add Suarez to that list next week, and possibly Povich, who should also make the PS roster as a lefty long relief option to mirror Suarez. Anyway, that game could have and would have gone much differently, IMO, if it were a playoff game. Burnes obviously stays in longer and gets at least through the top of the order if not back down to the bottom third to hand it over to the bullpen. Hopefully we'd be able to scratch out some runs, but that's not the bullpen's fault.  This is an extremely good team with a lead. Let's hope we get on the board early and often starting tonight.
    • Boy, Brandon Young who has some decent numbers at Norfolk must be injured or unimpressive to the front office to not even get a look for this bullpen. Bryan Baker is almost a waste of a call up.
    • Povich is off vs Detroit at least. Even if they carry a 9 man pen, Doubt that 5 will be left handers
    • I hate to say it because they are all eligible to succeed or fail ( DC just coming back ), would probally go with Soto.
