Summary:

Aberdeen took the rubber match of the series over the Vermont Lake Monsters, 3-1 on Wednesday night. Trevor Sprowl produced two RBI singles in his first two at-bats of 2015 to lead the IronBirds.

On The Board First:

The IronBirds took the lead in the second inning with an RBI single from Trevor Sprowl. Sprowl drove in Randy Gassaway on a two-out single to right. The at-bat was Sprowl's first of the season.

Back For More

Sprowl doubled the IronBirds' lead in the four with an identical single to right field, scoring Steve Laurino. Laurino singled to lead off the frame and Sprowl drove him in, once again, with two outs.

Cut In Half

The Lake Monsters got a run back in the seventh when Jesus Lopez led off with a double and came around to score on a throwing error two batters later.

Insurance:

Aberdeen scored a run in the ninth to regain their two-run lead thanks to Jerry McClanahan. Steve Laurino tripled to lead off the inning and then scored on a single from McClanahan.

Rollercoaster Ninth:

After the first two men reached for Vermont in the ninth, Argenis Raga pulled a sacrifice bunt back and chopped a ball to third. Guillermo Salas was waiting for it and turned the double play, limiting the threat. Elias Pinales finished off the game with a two-inning save, and the IronBirds earned a 3-1 win.

Bird Watching:

Trevor Sprowl's two RBI singles came on his first two at-bats of the season… Jerry McClanahan drove in the first run of his professional career in the ninth inning… Elias Pinales' two-inning save was his first save of his career

Trio of Homers Lift Baysox to Victory

Bowie, Md. – The Baysox bats woke up a 9-2 victory over New Britain Wednesday night as every batter in the line-up recorded at least one hit. The offense combined for 13 hits and scored six runs off three two-run homers in the bottom of the fifth inning to take control of the game.

Starter Parker Bridwell (3-4, 4.12) threw seven strong innings, giving up two runs on four hits while fanning six batters and walking none. Reliever Ashur Tolliver pitched two scoreless innings to finish out the game, allowing two hits while walking one and striking out one batter.

Playing in his fifth game of an MLB Rehab Assignment with the Baysox, Baltimore Orioles infielder Jonathan Schoop had another strong game, hitting a two-run homer to get the scoring started in the fifth inning. He finished the game 1-for-4 and he also helped turn a double play in the field.

The Baysox scored first in the bottom of the second after a lead-off single from Trey Mancini, who was able to make it to third after New Britain left fielder Mike Tauchman bobbled the hit and was charged with an error. Rossmel Perez plated Mancini on a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Baysox a 1-0 lead.

The Rock Cats jumped out in front in the third inning against Bridwell. Leading off, Will Swanner hit a solo home run to tie the game and Juan Ciriaco followed with a double. Ciriaco was moved to third on a ground out and brought home on a single from Tauchman to give New Britain a 2-1 lead.

The Baysox took the lead back in the fifth inning in exciting fashion. Quincy Latimore singled and was brought home on a homer from Schoop. Brandon Snyder then reached on a double and was brought home by a homer from Mancini, and in the following at bat Perez singled and was then plated by David Freitas’ third home run of the year. The six run rally gave the Baysox a 7-2 lead over the Rock Cats.

New Britain sent in Jose Ortega to relieve Ryan Carpenter in the seventh and the Baysox added to their lead. Ozzie Martinez led off with a double and moved to third on a single from Snyder. Trey Mancini was then walked and Martinez scored on a wild pitch from Ortega. Glynn Davis then singled to score Snyder from second and the two runs put the Baysox up 9-2.

    • Hm, seems like perfect situation for Akin as an opener, maybe game 3 if necessary?
    • You are such a Rebel.
    • Another possibility: If you win game 1, maybe you don't ptich Eflin in Game 2 and try to win Game 2 without using him.   I mean, worst that can happen is you lose and have Eflin for game 3 anyway.   So you won't lose the wild card series without pitching your two best. But you COULD win the wild card series without your two best, and then you would have Eflin and Burnes lined up for games 1 and 2 in Cleveland
    • I like Law a lot, but that is a beyond asinine comment about not playing every day on a playoff team. You know how many playoff teams would slot him in the lineup immediately every game? Answer: the large majority. The Yankees would take Cowser over Verdugo The Tigers might not put him in over Greene/Meadows/Carpenter, but they’d DH him over their options. Cowser would start over every outfielder for the Royals, IMHO. He’d start over Meyers and Dubon for the Astros. The Guardians would probably start him over anybody not named Kwan in the OF, tbh.  I can keep going.
    • Even more of a reason to like FG over BBref,  tbh. Thanks, didn’t realize they switched this year. My point re: FIP is that I rather prefer it over RA/9, not to say it’s perfect. RA/9 treats all runs allowed by a pitcher the same regardless of them being earned or unearned. So, a pitcher on a team with a terrible defense is going to be judged much more harshly than somebody that pitches on a top tier defense. Not to mention the bullpen taking over mid inning dilemma. The funny thing is in your example re: FIP, RA/9 would have the first pitcher but love the second. Either way, these stats, like nearly all single solitary stats, aren’t best taken alone.  For your example, let’s say Pitcher A allowed weak contact and the defenders just had poor range, poor arms, whatever, but in the second example the defenders had great range and great arms making amazing plays to prevent any damage…then what?  Anyways, give me FIP over RA/9 was my point. But if you want to truly assess a pitcher, you’re going to need a few complimentary stats to go along with it.
    • Really zooming the microscope in on one game with Tarik Skubal, would you consider batting Austin Slater 3rd or 4th to basically pinch hit in the 1st inning, and then replace him in LF with Cowser in the top of the 2nd inning. A tactic that might look good to the SIGBOT but could freak out actual ballplayers.
    • It would make sense. I think there are four possibilities for not announcing Eflin yet: 1. It’s going to be Eflin, we’re just waiting to announce to make it harder for Tigers/Royals to prepare. 2. Hyde and FO are discussing whether to slot Eflin for game 3 to possibly save him for ALDS game 1. 3. Hyde and FO are discussing a possible opener strategy for game 2. 4. Eflin has some minor aches/pains/soreness so we’re delaying the announcement to make sure he will be healthy enough.
