[Orioles] possible trade candidates

80% is a pretty darned high bar. There have been something like 50 players since WWII who have that rate with at least 50 successful steals in their careers. That's comparable to the number of players who've hit 400+ homers over that period. I think my takeaway from that is reinforcing the idea that you don't trade for players because they steal bases. It's just not that valuable.

Yeah. They don't give us points for that category.

Steals are exciting and disrupting and all that. All they have to do to make them more frequent is lower the run environment to the point where break-even is more achievable by average players, say 40-50%. So just expand the strike zone to shoetops-to-shoulders, and replace the cork in the baseball with lead. One-run strategies will make sense when most teams only score a run or two a game.

How many players who steal bases don't bring anything else to the game? On XM MLB's sabremetric show they were talking about Hamilton, who can't hit a lick, but is still worth 2 W halfway because of his defense and base running.

Not too many. But Hamilton's value is all defense. Total up his offense + baserunning and he's below average both this year and for his career. Luckily for him he's a plus defender. There just aren't many/any 1986 Vince Colemans any more (negative offensive value, negative defensive value, +15 baserunning).

Ziegler was not signed to be Arizona's closer. Addison Reed was their closer coming into the season, but he lost the job due to ineffectiveness.

Just a minor point. Otherwise, you are correct. Ziegler has been an outstanding reliever for several seasons.

Anyone on the Dbacks not named Goldy should be available.

FanGraphs has him at 9.7 runs above average at base running.

I don't understand the point of the trade? Trade a super-utility guy with control, for a super utility guy with no control who is having an even worse year than the guy we're trading. Trade a pitcher with control for a pitcher with no control who is having a little better season. And then trade a prospect as well. That almost seems like a trade for the sake of a trade.
