Making room for Reimold's return

wildcard

Recommended Posts

Nolan Reimold returns from paternity leave on Thursday. There are several ways to make room for him:

1) Option Gausman - Gausman has already been optioned this year for 12 days. If he is optioned for another 10 or more days his last option will be burned.

2) Gonzalez - He has an option but they need him to start vs the Nationals. So the timing is not good for him to be optioned on Thursday.

3) Chen - His next turn is to pitch vs the Nationals on the last day before the break, but Gausman also will have enough rest to take that start. Chen has been optioned for 10 days and if he is optioned again it burns an option. But who cares about his options, he has three and he will be a free agent. If they take a start away for Chen Boras will no doubt go public with the mistreatment of his client and Chen probably will not be happy about missing a start either.

4) Option Flaherty or Schoop - They both have options but the O's would miss one of them for 5 games. Three vs the Nationals and two vs the Tigers.

5) DFA someone - As you can see there are several ways to avoid DFAing anyone until July 25th when a 5th starter is needed. And there could be an injury between now and then which would mean they don't need to lose anyone. But the O's could DFA Reimold, Pearce, Lough, Snider or anyone either to make room on Thursday so they don't have to deal with items 1 through 4.

Which way do you think the O's will go on Thursday when Reimold comes off the paternity list?

I'm not sure your understanding of options is correct.

In all likelihood they will option Gausman after tonight's game. He has already used an option for this year, and once you use it once, there is no limit / downside to using it a bunch more times in the same season. It doesn't reset until the following year.

He has to be down 20 days for the option to count.

I am guessing the reference to 10 days is around an optioned player needing to stay down 10 days if not replacing an injured player.

I don't think that they are going to option Gausman. He's now in the rotation and thus needs to follow the routine of being in a team's pitching rotation. He doesn't need to be bounced down and then up yet again. And what do we do in the meantime -- put Norris back in the rotation? I don't think so.

Probably will option Flaherty or else DFA someone.

Roch says he's already used his option for 2015......you're saying he has not?

Because of the off day on Thursday, Gausman's next turn to pitch after today may not be until July 17th..........coincidentally 10 days from today.

If wildcard's numbers are right (I don't know if they are or not), Roch is wrong.

Alright, well I should apologize to wildcard then I suppose. It appears that I had more to learn about options after all.

I have him being optioned on June 21 and recalled on July 2.........yea that looks like 12 days.

So if they ride the carousel with him again, I suppose that will mean he is officially out of options, but I'm not sure that's really that important (it simply means we can't jerk him around again next year etc....not sure how valuable that is).

DD has shown throughout the season that he will do everything possible to avoid DFA a player that has potential value at the MLB level. That eliminates #5. I don't have the brain power to grasp options or the calendar well enough to choose from the other four, but I think when they optioned Flaherty that was a signal of where he stands.

Lough is another possibility for a position player that has been much discussed during these situations, but somehow he continues to survive on the MLB roster.

No need to apologize. It takes a while to understand options. And when I think I know the rules they pull something different on me. They just optioned Flaherty for a day. He was eligible to come back because of Reimold's paternity leave. Who knew?

I thought that you could bring players up and down throughout a season and it would be only one option?

You can, but you don't burn the option until they spend 20 days in the minors. Gausman has only spent 12 days down there, so they haven't burned his option yet.

This is still true. However the player must be down for at least 20 days for the option to count. Just learned that myself.
