Why I won't miss our departing FAs very much

I want to see O'Day come back, and possibly Chen. The others: give them a QO and let them go on their way.

Agree. I could see O'Day being signed before the year is out. Chen would be great but I can't see any situation that would allow us to keep him because someone will offer outrageous $$. I really wish we would start looking at the first tier international guys, specifically hitters with good D. Current difference makers are being locked up these days thus there is very little in the way of FA. Going international has some risk but more economically efficient IMO.

You mean like Puig and 42 million, wait, you said good D, so that leave him out?

The QO was never 17 million either, like it is now.

With the fiasco last season, I suspect somebody will finally take the QO, however, chances are pretty good, that it wont be Matt.

Or Chen or Davis. Norris, O'Day won't get one. No fiasco last year when QO was 15.3 mil, it was the year before with 5 players having trouble signing.

Hopefully the trade packages we are offered are better than the QO, but if not, QO Chen, Davis, and Wieters. Neither will be worth what he gets on the open market. O'Day should be traded. An elite bullpen arm at the deadline could net us a nice return, and we aren't going to give him a QO.

I don't think Wieters' departure will hurt the team much. Caleb Joseph has been about as productive as Wieters this season, and it sounds like Clevenger has improved his defense to the point where he will be an adequate backup next year.

But losing Chen, O'Day and Davis are all going to hurt. All of them are productive players who are likely to be replaced by inferior players next season, whether in-house or cheap free agents.

I think it will be interesting to see what the market is for Chen, Davis, and Wieters.

There are a ton of starting pitchers coming on the market seeking big money. I'm not sure Chen gets more than 4/60.

Other than Atlanta, what other teams are going to jump in the market for Wieters? I could see Wieters get a 4/50 contract but would be shocked if someone went beyond that. Lots of risk here.

Davis. Where is the big demand coming for him in the market? What significant team is going to want to pay him big money? Again, I don't see him getting a mega deal.

They did get us to the playoffs last year. Short memory! I will certainly miss what they brought in 2012 and 2014.

That said, I don't think we should go out of our way to sign any of them, and I look forward to seeing what the organization will do moving forward.

Wieters of all people should take a deal for as many years as he can get. Any long term deal within reason he would be nuts to pass on, in my opionion.

Wieters missed more of the season and Davis was suspended. I would offer Davis a QO but not a long term contract. I would offer Wieters a new contract but not at ridiculous money. It's hard to justify paying an average hitter big money.

I won't miss all of Davis's strikeouts and the boom or bust nature of his daily contributions.

That's crazy talk. A lot of the experts who post here will make the compelling argument that strikeouts and poor plate discipline aren't a big deal. They will then accuse you of being stuck in the past. Just study fangraphs and read the boxscores instead of watching the games and you'll fit right in. Also, always remember that stats mean everything, just like how Chris Davis' meaningless solo homer in the 9th inning meant so much

    • I think you'd see a much stronger correlation to how they were rated in the minors vs. draft position. Westburg has been treated similarly to Cowser and Kjerstad. Adley, Gunnar and Holliday were all consensus #1 prospects and have been given pretty much immediate every day player status.
    • Game ball or the equivalent of hockey star(s) of the game for me: Suarez — all of those zero’s on the road, gets my game ball. Kimbrel is my runner-up. I know striking out Trout with the bases loaded is the job, but it ain’t easy. Cowser - Honorable Mention. I’m still not 100 percent in on the Milkman nickname, but he sure is fun to watch.
    • Yeah - I was thinking Beavers could fill that spot, but it seems he is more suited for a corner outfield position, if he makes the bigs at all.
    • We have all this year and next if it’s needed.   No rush.  No hurry.
    • Kjesrtad was Elias's #1 pick in 2020 draft and #2 overall, so Elias saw something great in him.  Can you all imagine how powerful the O's will be if Holliday starts to hit and Kjerstadt hits like he did in the minors, Kjesrtad did good when he was called up in 2023.  They will be the Baltimore Bombers!
    • I'm not crushing Santander either, but he's a career .765 OPS guy. It was .797 last year. His only year over .800 was the Covid year. He plays average defense. Not a butcher, but not exactly rangy out there. Long story short, I think you can get similar power with more OBP from Kjerstad and Cowser with similar defense for Kjerstad and better for Cowser. So yes, I'd say they'll be better than Santander.
    • Can we get Buster Olney, talking heads, and various posters to look in the mirror for their ridiculing Elias' "hoarding" prospects? The strategy has always been about raising the competitive floor/ceiling while managing risk like a portfolio manager.  Seeking alpha while managing beta is the goal.  Sig's purpose is the quantify. And yet we still have people tossing out trade proposals and extensions and unhealthy FA pursuits because they know better and moving prospects to other positions.  It's fun to speculate but it's foolish to present it as an absolute.
