Trade Watch (It starts)

Indicative of the very poor drafting of this organization compared to other systems over the last 10 years. Other organizations seemingly always have endless prospects to get whomever they wish for. This is also due to other organizations being willing to cut bait with their big league guys before losing them in return for hauls of prospects. Also due to the old rules regarding trading free agents you had rented and getting picks back in return.

Now I disagree.

The issue wasn't so much drafting as development. That takes time to fix. DD has only been here 3+ years.

This move very head scratching for both marlins and braves.

@PBPjasonlieser: From a non-traded Marlin: "This is some of the stupidest f------ s--- I've ever seen today. On the field, off the field, all of it."

Here is article a about dodgers philosophy

@JeffPassan: What the Dodgers are doing with their money is exactly what the Yankees should have been doing for the past decade: http://t.co/xJgtQym5EW

Here are the details, including the Marlins pieces missing from the Braves release.

The “basic” structure of the deal (though there’s nothing basic about this move) is as follows: the Dodgers will receive right-hander Mat Latos and first baseman Michael Morse from the Marlins. They’ll also add top prospect Jose Peraza and pitchers Alex Wood, Bronson Arroyo, Jim Johnson and Luis Avilan from the Braves. Atlanta, in turn, will receive Cuban infielder Hector Olivera, lefty Paco Rodriguez and minor leaguer Zachary Bird from the Dodgers. The Braves are also picking up Miami’s Competitive Balance Round A pick in next year’s draft (No. 35 overall). The Marlins will come out of this deal with three minor league pitchers — Kevin Guzman, Jeff Brigham and Victor Araujo — plus the financial relief of shedding the remaining $14.3MM that is owed to Latos and Morse.

I dont think they are that head scratching. Miami chose unloading payroll over trying to get a decent player back for Latos. With Latos' injuries and ineffectiveness there may not have been a better option than to unload payroll.

Atlanta gets to move a sizeable amount of salary in Arroyo and obtain Olivera at half of his original cost. Seems odd to part with a top prospect and decent starter but they have added a lot of top pitching talent.

So I think we can say goodbye to the Upton/Cespedes/Cargo ideas... I knew better but still allowed myself to believe. Why do I do this every season?! Lol

Exactly. Just once it would be fun to be on the receiving end of a load like Toronto, Kansas City fans just got to enjoy, Detroit fans in years past, etc. But we get the dregs, the leftovers, if that. Likely nothing this year, which is what I thought from the beginning.

Sure it would be fun. But we dont have the pieces in quality or quantity that KC and Toronto gave up.

Right. Not unless you want to give up Gausman for 2 months of Price. He's the only comp we have to a Daniel Norris.

The issue wasn't so much drafting as development. That takes time to fix. DD has only been here 3+ years.

Since 2005, number one picks have been Brandon Snyder and Garrett Olson (these were both in first round of 2005), Pedro Beato, Matt Wieters (leaving this year for which we will get a comp pick), Brian Matusz (leaving likely for a bag o balls), Matthew Hobgood (who ranks up there with the Beau Hale, Tripper Johnson, Chris Smith number one picks of 2000-2001) Manny Machado , Dylan Bundy- hurt, Kevin Gausman, Hunter Harvey. So four contributing big leaguers and one star out of 10 years of number one picks- Matusz is a mediocre bullpen arm, Wieters, Machado, Gausman. And below that, the prospects have been even thinner which is why we have squat to trade right now. Development is certainly a problem but so is drafting and so is giving away comp picks like we did with the Ryan Webb deal.

Oh I know that. Somehow KC got those pieces in their system after spending their time in the wilderness, but we did not.

Didn't Arroyo's arm fall off?
