Julio Borbon had three hits and Henry Urrutia homered, but Norfolk’s late rally fell just short in a 6-5 setback to the Indianapolis Indians Saturday night at Harbor Park.

For the second straight night, Norfolk trailed the contest 6-1 before plating three ninth inning runs in a 6-5 loss. The Tides went to the final frame trailing 6-2 before Henry Urrutia lined a solo home run down the right field line. After a Rey Navarro single and a Dariel Alvarez walk, Steve Clevenger then lined a two-out, two-run double to right-center field to pull the Tides within a run. Indy closer Blake Wood worked out of the jam, however, inducing a groundout by Sean Halton to preserve the lead and register his league-leading 24th save of the season.

Borbon singled three times in the contest to extend his hitting streak to six games, over which he’s hit .542 (13-24) with three RBI and four runs scored. The University of Tennessee product singled home Norfolk’s first run in the fourth inning, then scored the Tides’ second run of the contest when he opened the seventh frame with a hit before coming around to score on a single by Navarro.

Navarro finished with three hits in the loss, as Norfolk registered 12 hits but left 10 men on base.

Norfolk starter Terry Doyle (1-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings of work. Doyle, who entered play tied for the Minor League lead with 13 victories between Bowie and Norfolk, walked one and struck out five while throwing 61 of his 98 pitches for strikes. It was the first loss for Doyle since May 17, snapping a stretch of 14 consecutive games in which Doyle’s team got the win in a game he started.

Former Tide Radhames Liz (4-4) earned the win for Indianapolis, as he allowed one unearned run on five hits over 6.0 innings. Liz, who pitched in 32 games (21 starts) for Norfolk in 2008 and 2009, now owns a 1.12 ERA through 12 games (nine starts) with the Indians this season.

John Bowker and Willy Garcia both homered for Indianapolis, while former Tide Steve Lombardozzi added two runs batted in.

Gunkel, Baysox Shut Down Fisher Cats

Bowie, Md. – The Baysox took the second game of the series against New Hampshire in a 2-0 shutout victory, led by another strong outing from starter Joe Gunkel (8-3, 2.89). The Baysox have now won nine of the 12 games Gunkel has started since being traded to Baltimore.

Bowie took the lead in the first inning and never looked back against New Hampshire starter Mike Lee. Trey Mancini extended his hitting streak to eight games with a double and Quincy Latimore brought him home on a single to put the Baysox up 1-0.

In the fourth inning the Baysox added to their lead. Tucker Nathans singled and attempted to score from first on a double from Garabez Rosa but was thrown out at home. Rosa moved to third on the throw and then scored on a Drew Dosch single to give the Baysox a 2-0 lead.

Gunkel threw 6.2 scoreless innings, giving up just three hits and two walks and striking out seven in route to his sixth victory while with the Baysox. Reliever Pat McCoy (3-2, 3.86) recorded the final out of the seventh inning and Mychal Givens (4-2, 1.79) threw two scoreless innings to close out the game and pick up his 15th save of the season. This was Givens’ first appearance back with the Baysox since being promoted to Baltimore for the second time this season. Lee took his first loss of the season for New Hampshire

Frederick Keys News Release

STRONG PITCHING LEADS KEYS PAST PELICANS

HESS FIRES OFF SIX INNINGS OF ONE-RUN BASEBALL

Myrtle Beach, S.C. –The Frederick Keys got outstanding pitching from David Hess, Garrett Cortright and Donnie Hart to earn a 2-1 victory over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Saturday night at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Park. With the win, the Keys improve to 18-16 in one-run games this year and move back over .500 in the second-half CL North standings (22-21). Frederick remains three games back of Lynchburg for first place.

Hess posted his second straight win against the Pelicans, tossing six innings of one-run baseball. He scattered five hits, walked two and struck out four. Since the all-star break, Hess is 5-0 with a 1.37 ERA.

Myrtle Beach’s lone run came home in the second. With one out, Carlos Penalver tripled on a 1-2 pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Hankins. Myrtle Beach also had a chance to add a run in the first, but they squandered a chance with runners on the corners. On a double steal attempt, Pin-Chieh Chen took second, but Chance Sisco faked a throw to second and went to third to nab Young. Victor Caritini then flied out to center field to end the inning.

Paul Blackburn did not allow a hit through his first three innings, but labored in the fourth. Jeff Kemp opened the inning with a triple, while a walk to Sisco put runners at the corners. That sent up Wynston Sawyer, who bounced a ball to the third baseman Jason Vosler. Coming home, Vosler’s throw went over the catcher’s head to tie the game up at one. Sisco also advanced to third on the play. One batter later, Yaisel Mederos singled to center to put the Keys up for good.

‘Birds Stymied in 5-0 Defeat

Losing skid runs to four straight games

HAGERSTOWN, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds could not muster an offensive attack on Saturday night, stymied in a 5-0 defeat to the Hagerstown Suns. A trio of Suns’ pitcher limited Delmarva to just two hits in a shutout, handing the Shorebirds their fourth straight loss.

The game began as a pitchers’ duel between Shorebirds’ starter Brian Gonzalez and the Suns’ Jeff Howell. Gonzalez kept the Suns off the board through four innings, stranding multiple baserunners in scoring position. Howell, a 32-year-old converted catcher, puzzled batters with a knuckleball in his Suns’ debut.

Hagerstown broke through in the fifth inning against Gonzalez. After retiring the first two batters, Gonzalez surrendered a bloop single to Wilman Rodriguez. Two stolen bases set up Andrew Stevenson’s RBI knock to start the scoring. After a walk, Jose Marmolejos hit a three-run home run to open up a 4-0 lead for Hagerstown.

Max Schuh pitched well in relief for Delmarva, though he did surrender one run in the sixth to extend the Suns’ lead. Dale Carey singled, followed by a hit-by-pitch to Bryan Mejia. After a double steal, Austin Davidson lifted a sacrifice fly for a 5-0 advantage. Schuh retired the final eight batters he faced with three strikeouts over his three innings.

Howell pitched four scoreless innings in the start for Hagerstown. Mario Sanchez earned the win with three perfect innings in relief, and Koda Glover finished the night with two shutout frames. The three Suns’ pitchers retired 21 consecutive batters in between the first and eighth innings.

The IronBirds fell to Tri-City, 5-1 Saturday night in their final game of the three-game series. Strategic hitting and two homeruns from the ValleyCats proved to be the difference in the game.

Sacrifice, You Must

With Johnny Sewald at third base, Brooks Marlow lifted a sacrifice fly ball to right field. Sewald was able to tag and score for Tri-City's first run.

These Aren't The Plays You're Looking For

The fourth inning saw two more runs for the ValleyCats. The first came with Pat Porter scoring on an Anthony Hermelyn single to right field. The latter came when Cesar Carrasco grounded into a double play back to IronBirds pitcher Zach Albin, who tossed the ball to Ricardo Andujar at second. Andujar quickly chucked the ball to Alexander Lee at first base, but it was enough time for Kolbey Carpenter to make it home and extend the lead to three.

All Systems Go

The IronBirds scored their first and only run in the fifth inning. Alejandro Juvier came to the plate with Austin Pfeiffer at second base. Juvier chopped a slow roller to shallow third base with two outs. ValleyCats third basemen Cesar Carrasco tried to grab the ball with his bare hand, but missed the ball entirely. Pfeiffer went on contact, and was able to score on the throw to first base.

The Force Was Against Us

The Valleycats added their last two runs with big flies from Pat Porter and Brooks Marlow. Pat Porter launched a homer over the wall in right-center in the sixth inning, and Marlow took one out of the yard in right field in the eighth.

Birdwatching

DJ Stewart had his second consecutive multi-hit game…. Lazaro Leyva made his first-career start… Alexander Lee recorded his fourth double of the season… Alejandro Juvier had his first multi-hit game, including his first triple of the season, as well as his first RBI.
