Mussina was at the game tonight

. Exactly, I cannot understand or relate in the least to any Orioles fan who doesn't see it this way. If you have no hard feelings all I can say is you must like being punked!

Let's say you were drafted by the Walla Walla Dinosaurs. So after many years, when it came time to finally have a choice in where you live and work the Dinosaurs (who happened to be an old, declining team with an erratic owner and no farm system) offered you a deal 20% less than the Orioles. Your response would be "no thanks, I'm forever indebted to the Dinosaurs because they drafted me, I can't ever leave and hurt their awesome fans. I'll gladly take less money to stay in Walla Walla despite the fact I had absolutely no interest in the team before they drafted me."

Old dead-horse topic, but MM was absolutely recognized throughout the clubhouse as a jerk during his time here. That said, I applauded Saturday. Plenty of folks around me stood up; I didn't go that far.

The same complaint was said Cal Ripken Jr too, during his playing days by some.

Nowhere near. Not by my inside folks.

I know, Mussina has been based in OH for years, I get it, lots of haters.

Not knowing the guy and not knowing insiders, can only go by what I read in the media. You also got to take things with a grain of salt sometimes.

As for Cal, I suspect some of it was jealousy, he was the media darling with the Grehig streak and he got to stay in separate hotels and I have heard stories about guys that knews guys that knew him and said he was difficult to work with/for. Again, got to take it with a grain of salt.

Very different guys. Moose was an a-hole. Think Erik Bedard but more subtle about it. Junior was a bit of a prima donna but basically harmless (don't ask Kelly, though).

Mike was at a game I attended either last year or the year before, and the O's put him on the big screen. I surprised myself when I stood up and gave the guy a standing ovation. I thought he was a traitor when he left, but I guess in my case, time heals all wounds. Drungo's made some great points in this thread. It's a business, pure and simple. It's not to the fans, but it is to the players, and I can't say I blame them given how much money the owners make.

I might stay with Walla Walla if I thought that there was a good chance that I would be the first Dinosaur ever to have his number retired.

Then again, I also completely understood Melvin Mora's insistence that he have a no-trade clause put into his contract for the last-place team that he played for, AND the fact that even though the team continued to stay in last place for the remainder of his Oriole tenure, he would have exorcised said clause to block any and all trade attempts ....... which is why the Orioles didn't even think about trading him.

I wonder how may threads there have been over the year debating whether Mussina was a traitor for leaving the Orioles? My views are well known, so I won't repeat them here. I'll just say I think it was classy of the Orioles to recognize him when he came to the game.

I don't hate Mussina anymore but I'm glad he never won a WS in New York. I probably would have applauded though. He was a great pitcher for us. I get that it's a business too but players who leave for hated rivals should know that it's not a business for fans. It's personal for us. So go ahead and take what you think is the best contract, I won't blame ya necessarily but go to the Yanks in your prime or another hated rival and I'll boo you until you're a shell of your former self.

As for Cal, I suspect some of it was jealousy, he was the media darling with the Gehrig streak and he got to stay in separate hotels and I have heard stories about guys that knews guys that knew him and said he was difficult to work with/for. Again, got to take it with a grain of salt.

I have a pal who was pretty deep in the org in the late 80s/early 90s, who always says that Cal was a guy who definitely knew when the cameras were on. Mussina didn't seem to care: Just as aloof in front of teammates as he was with the media and fans.

    • Hard to say hiw Manny would have been as a SS if he’d played it right from the start in the majors.  Due to Hardy’s presence, he essentially played 3B for 5.3 seasons before ever getting a shot as full time SS.   By that time he’d lost some speed and range and was rusty at the ins and outs of SS. If 2012-14 Hardy was on this team, Gunnar would be at 3B, watching Hardy win his three Gold Gloves.
    • The Orioles are not going to re-sign Burnes and they prob shouldn't based on what he's going to ask for. Answer is Gunnar and it's not even really close.  Give the man whatever he wants and keep him indefinitely.
    • Gunnar. He will add an All Star nod this year and is on an MVP pace. Higher WAR in fewer PA.
    • Still a lot of things to shake out this year that IMO affects this decision.   1. Is Silent J the heir apparent to RF? 2. Is Beavers taking the next step and showing as a viable starting OF? 3. Is Fabian taking the next step to be a legit 4th OF who can play all 3 positions?   I will be very surprised if Taters is on the team next year. Honestly I think that if he is it will be due to failure of the young guys to show out. Good thing for us is we have enough of them that I don’t think that will happen.
    • He said after the game that he has five pitches, and if any three of them are working on a given night, he can mix them up enough to get batters out.
    • He’s had quite the turnaround vs. LHP on this road trip.  Hopefully it continues all year!
    • Gunnar's definitely looking like the MVP of the Orioles and looks like priority #1 to me to get an extension. Burnes age works against him, because the O's maybe don't want to go longer than 5-6 years at most, but I could be wrong there. The Witt extension kind of set the parameters of what Gunnar will probably want at minimum. 2025 25 Kansas City Royals $8,111,111     2026 26 Kansas City Royals $14,111,111     2027 27 Kansas City Royals $20,111,111     2028 28 Kansas City Royals $31,111,111     2029 29 Kansas City Royals $36,111,111     2030 30 Kansas City Royals $36,111,111     2031 31 Kansas City Royals *$35,000,000   $35M Player Option 2032 32 Kansas City Royals *$35,000,000   $35M Player Option 2033 33 Kansas City Royals *$35,000,000   $35M Player Option 2034 34 Kansas City Royals *$35,000,000   $35M Player Option 2035 35 Kansas City Royals *$33,000,000   $33M Team Option 2036 36 Kansas City Royals *$28,000,000   $28M Team Option 2037 37 Kansas City Royals *$28,000,000   $28M Team
