Salcedo... Age Concerns

Recommended Posts

does it really matter how OLD they are as long as they are good right??

The issue is how much to pay him. Supposedly he was asking for $6 mil (what we gave Weiters), which if he is 16, he is a phenom and it's possible. But if he is 18=19, he is just another prospect, and worth less. Given he'd be a good prospect, but not worth that much money when you can draft someone comparable for much less.

At 16 he may get $4 mil, but at 18 you can knock that down to $2 mil, and at 20 you are looking at $1 if that.

No way I'm tossing that kind of coin at a kid when there are that many question marks. There is a reason he's not under contract already.

Thankyou! If he was half of what A-rod was at age 16, I assure you, he'd be signed already.

    • I have more confidence in Kjerstad's defense in the outfield than what is seems like most people here do. I've seen him play the outfield in person several times tracking down fly balls and he always made plays that I thought were not routine fly balls to get to. He might not be fast but he knows what angles to take to get to them. I'd probably say that Right Field is his best position. Though in some cases and baseball fields he can play left field if you need him. I certainly feel more confident about Kjerstad's defense in the OF than I do O'Hearn. But I feel more confident about O'Hearn playing 1st Base than I do Kjerstad. Both make for a pretty good DH.
    • Norby and Stowers aren’t bringing a difference-making starting pitcher (maybe you meant Mounty in the package also).  I don’t think anyone would hesitate (least of all Elias) if that opportunity presented itself. I’d part with Norby and Stowers for a difference making relief pitcher like Hunter Harvey, Lucas Erczeg, Griffin Jax, Anthony Bender, Calvin Faucher, or Ryan Helsey.  They can also have Mike Bauman and for some of those targets, I’d also throw in Seth Johnson.
    • Suárez is giving up a lot of hard contact, but on high fly balls or ground balls. He has a .218 xBA and .314 xSLG, and a 82nd percentile barrel rate. I don’t know if that’s a tightrope he’s walking and it’s just a matter of time before the barrels come, or he’s going to be able to do that consistently to some degree - time will tell.  What’s clear is the fastball plays well up in the zone and he’s been good at locating it there, getting a ton of whiffs and easy fly balls. The changeup looks promising too. I’m skeptical of the cutter, but it looks like it plays pretty well as a change of pace for glove side movement given the huge arm side run on the fastball and changeup.  I still see a potentially dominant RP when I watch him, and worry that he’s not going to hold up as a SP given how much he runs out of gas later in these appearances. He also wasn’t able to hit the same velo he did in his second start after emptying the tank in his debut. I fear if we keep running him out there as a SP, he’s going to eventually either throw more ~93-94 mph and lose effectiveness, or blow out his arm. I’m worried of jeopardizing a potentially dominant RP in that pursuit. However we have to keep rolling with him while he’s one of the 5 best SP and hope for the best, and he certainly is right now. I just hope he ends up in the pen due to there being 5 better, healthy SP before he has any injuries.
    • Lower the bar to 400 PAs and there were 27.  Health and platoons?  Still less than 1 per team.  In the early going, there are 42 over .850.  Still wouldn't count on it, but crazier things have happened from lesser talent over the course of a season. As a team, O's team OPS is .780.  Sure a few mild surprises, but also a nothing burger from Holliday.
