mdbdotcom
I don't know the answer to this and I have no agenda. I'd like to know what posters who spend time evaluating prospects on a granular level think. At the 2014 deadline, the Rays sent David Price to the Tigers, who sent Austin Jackson to the Mariners, and the Rays ended up with Drew Smyly and Nick Franklin. At this season's deadline, the Tigers sent Price to the Blue Jays for Daniel Norris, Jairo Labourt, and Matt Boyd. Were the Rays right in trading Price when he was more than just a rental? Was their haul significantly better than what the Tigers received for him? Or, did they merely save themselves Price's 2015 salary while trading a key asset a year before they needed to? For the Tigers, they effectively traded Drew Smyly and Austin Jackson for Daniel Norris, Jairo Labourt, and Matt Boyd, with a year of David Price for good measure. That seems like a good deal to me. Am I wrong? Do these deals do anything to prove or disprove the theory that a team will get more for a player by trading him when he's not just a rental? Franklin is not anything. The Tigers made out like bandits. Of course this was the trade of an ACE during a playoff race. The Old David Cone tactic. Crafty lefty and the O's scorched him the other night - oh wait...... (SSS) :slytf: He would suck for us but I hate facing him with our aggressive approach. You're forgetting that the Rays also got Willy Adames, who was the key prospect in the deal. He's only in High-A ball, so he's a ways away from the majors, but that changes the trade calculus a bit. Stotle
Smyly looked pretty impressive for the Rays last year, he has been hurt this year. Yeah, there really isn't any disputing that. 4.0 SO/BB and WHIP under 0.80 for the Rays last year and though limited to seven starts this year has a 5.25 SO/BB and WHIP around 1.15. He's a dude. I had been hoping for years that the Orioles would pry him away from Detroit. Too bad that he ended up in Tampa.
Frobby
Tampa also got Willy Adams in the trade. He was a top 100 prospect coming into 2015 and has a .762 OPS this year in A+ ball at age 19. I don't know why weams is so down on Smyly, he looks like a solid MOR starter to me. Nick Franklin hasn't popped yet but a year ago he was very comparable to Schoop.
