Opening Day: 3/31, O's vs Tampa Bay

What's up with that lineup for the Rays? I have the Rays pegged for 85 wins this year, but that's a pretty big stretch with Longoria at AAA and Gomes on the bench.

Well, a lot of our hopes this year were pinned on the front 3 of the rotation of Kazmir, Shields, and Garza, but that's been delayed because of Kaz's injury. Additionally, with Bartlett now manning SS and upgrading the bullpen, the Rays addressed their biggest needs in the offseason. Really, that's what cost us a bunch of games last season.

That said, yes, the lineup doesn't look that great after the first four of Aki, Crawford, Pena, and Upton, which is very formidable. Rocco's injury put us in a hole at RF and Longoria, who I thought could hit 30 HRs as a rookie, being sent down takes a lot of potential punch away from the hitting.

We'll see how the season goes down.

Lineup facts:

RAMON HERNANDEZ - 19 catchers have started an opener for Baltimore. Ramon becomes the 14th to start at least two (remember - Bako started last year)

MILLAR - 20 players have started for the O's at 1B. Millar becomes the 10th man to start at least twice (he started a 3rd opener as the DH)

ROBERTS - 22 second baseman have started an Orioles opener. With his 5th start, Brian now trails only Dauer & Davey Johnson.

MORA - 18 third baseman have started for the O's. With Mora's 5th start at that position (plus one each in CF & LF), he trails only Brooks & Cal

LUIS HERNANDEZ - 13th different O's shortstop & 2nd from Venezuela (Luis Aparicio)

SCOTT - will become the 32nd different opening day left-fielder

JONES - will become the 21st different opening day CF

MARKAKIS - 33 different right-fielders & Nick will become the 11th guy to start two

HUFF - becomes the 25th different DH starter (his 2nd opening day, as he played 1B last year)

GUTHRIE - 32nd different pitcher. No one ever had fewer than his 7 career wins (Larsen in '54 also had 7) or 12 career decisions

I hope the O's can rack up a few wins against them early in the year, because the Rays could be pretty nasty in the second half with Longoria, and David/McGee/Niemann/(or even Price) rounding out the rotation.

Two surprises for me:

1) Bobby Grich must not have played here very long if only Dauer and Johnson have more than 5 starts on OD.

2) Would have thought Doug Decinces would have been ahead of Mora.

With Price's injury and him being delayed to start the season, I doubt we see him this season.

I do expect the Rays to finish (finally) ahead of the O's this year, but not by much. With Kaz's injury and Longoria being sent down, that takes away some potential early season wins and I've adjusted my win total for the Rays this year from 78 to 72. I think the O's win anywhere from 65-70 games. Believe it or not, you might (and probably do) have the better lineup than us without Longoria in there.

The Rays season, plain and simple, will come down to whether or not Garza is the real deal (I think he is) and the bullpen is improved enough to the point to where it's not a complete detriment. If not, they could be looking at another 66 win type season.

Grich started 4 times at 2B & DeCinces started 4 times at 3B.

Something I'd forgotten about, and had to doublecheck to believe, occured in 1978.

Earl Weaver started DeCinces at 2B, and Eddie Murray at 3B! The O's got rocked 11-3, and both were back at their usual positions for the vast majority of the year.

What are your thoughts on the Young/Garza trade? I feel like your team sold low on Young. I think he'll be a really good player.

Hell yeah. Heeeell yeah.

I also laughed my ass off at them playing "Loser" when introducing the Devil Rays.

I'm so happy baseball is here.

You'll get yourself in trouble if you keep calling them the Devil Rays.

I was really waiting for Hunter to mess up and call them the Devil Rays, since he did it in the opening ot ths how.

    • HEY YANKEES! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnxNRPy_SOA
    • Yeah I'm all for sportsmanship but seeing 'Congratulations Yankees' at or near the top of the board is sickening, not gonna lie.  There is no high road when it comes to these clowns.  Boone's constant whining, the well-documented HP ump favoritism (I don't care if its framing or whatever, its happening, and its annoying AF), the whining about Judge getting hit on the hand while their guys constantly pitch inside including of course the Kjerstad play where they were literally cutting up on the bench as he lay prone on home plate, the ginormous payroll, the incredibly entitled fan base booing at pitches being called balls that are three inches off the plate, that stupid roll call, that stupid whistle after strikeouts, the stupid national media drooling over a Judge v Ohtani WS possibility, Nestor Cortes and his dumb mustache, the mediocre stadium that is revered simply because its called Yankee Stadium, the ridiculously short RF porch, the Soto Shuffle or whatever the hell it is. Congratulations my ass.  Screw those dudes.
    • Here's the deal. I doubt anyone on the Yankee's board congradulated us last year. This year they won the East. Whippie for them. It's like saying the IRS won tax season. IF, we do anything in the playoffs, we may meet again. But there are some significant hurdles before that. And they could easily lose along the way. Cleveland, Houston, Detroit, and KC are no walk in the park. I'll root for the O's to go as far as they can and that the Yankees are one and done. We are in. I hope we win one more so we play the opening round in Oriole Park. If not, we are still in and have to do what we got to do to go anywhere. Two years in a row. While the Red Sox, Blue Jays, and Tampa sleep. Year two with a heck of a lot more obstacles. This may not be a WS year but we are competitive, young, and a hell of a lot classier than that bunch in the Bronx.
    • The usage of Cano last night was poor, I don't even blame him really.  Yankees had 9-1-2 coming up, and Torres is well known (based on the telecast) to hit Cano well, and hit sinkers well.  He laced that hit to RF off him on Tuesday where the Yanks screwed up the baserunning.  And Soto got a hit off him that same inning.  So it was pretty predictable that these guys were going to tee off when he came in, and that's exactly what happened. Not to mention he's pitched a lot recently, and Burnes should have pitched another inning anyway.  Just baffling decisions by Hyde last night, and I'm not one to generally question those types of things.  Even if the Burnes thing was pre-ordained, the choice of Cano for that moment was terrible.
    • Why is this thread on the Oriole Talk section.    It probably does not belong on the OriolesHangout  at all but if it stays it should be on the MLB section.
    • If there's two outs and its not Judge in the hole, I'm probably going with Perez, crossing my fingers he gets the lefty, and then starting fresh the next inning with Coulombe or someone else.  If there's one out, I'm going w/ Coulombe.
