Are we heading back into the dark ages?

I'm going to bookmark this thread so I can bring it back up several years from now if we do go back to the dark ages. All the "experts" on here who are so certain that things will go well in life and being so sure that history won't repeat it self are usually the ones who get caught off guard. I personally don't know if we're headed back to the dark ages (nobody does), but I always have a hope for the best plan for the worst attitude.

While you're at it, why don't you bookmark this thread, as well:

The 4-32 Meltdown / Final 40-Game Predictions

http://forum.orioleshangout.com/forums/showthread.php/149772-The-4-32-meltdown-Final-40-game-predictions

Here is the OP (I'm sure that you two would get along great with each other.)

It was many years ago on this exact date, Aug 22, that the Orioles got to .500 and then embarked on the infamous late season 4-32 meltdown, which became a symbol of the "dark years."

So what is your prediction for the next 40 games?

The Orioles were 63-63 at the 126-game mark this season.

In order to finish up the final 36 games at 4-32, the Orioles would have to finish with a final record of 67-95.

The Orioles' current record is 72-74.

I think that it will be difficult to finish up at 4-32 (as the OP suggests as a very real possibility), considering that they are already 9-11 from that starting point (the 126th game of the season) with 16 games left to play.

What are you talking about Hazewood ???

I was born in Baltimore.

I've been rooting for the Orioles since Christopher Columbus came to the West Indies more than 500 years ago.

I've had season tickets since the Battle of Gettysburg.

How dare you question my fandom just because I'm not a blind homer, and don't kiss up to Angelos and his cronies, and call out the front office for them dropping the ball, and ..........

You were the one who said you would bookmark this thread in order to hold it against other fans in the future.

Pretty much every GM gets fired. Teams inevitably go into downturns. It is not easy to build a consistently competitive team without spending enormous amounts of cash. Saying a .500 team with a poor farm system might have some bad years ahead isn't really adding to what could be an interesting conversation in this thread.

Frankly, I don't care if we lose in the next few years as long as our GM takes the steps to develop our next winning team. I am not expecting our GM to fashion a winning team next year with the $ available after our pending free agent losses, but it could really be something to lose the production of Chen, O'Day and Davis and have our GM craft a better next year.

It's baseball.

Who the heck knows.

That is the only correct answer.

I remember prior to the 2012 season many posters saying this team was AT MINIMUM 5 years away from competing seriously.

Who predicted the Astros or Rangers to be challenging for the AL West crown this year? Who predicted the Mets to be coasting over the Nationals? It's nearly impossible to predict.

Any given year is difficult to predict, but the current/future success of the Astros and Rangers is not difficult to predict. IMO, the teams that have accumulated the most under 25, pre-FA talent are in for some pretty good years. The teams lacking that talent are likely in for some lean years.

Don't forget the collapse of the Tigers too.

But, you are very right, it's baseball.

From 1961 to 1983 this team won 90 games or more 17 times. 6 Pennants. 3 Championships. Renaissance Age

From 1984 to 2011 this team won 90 games or more 2 times. 0 Pennants. 0 Championships. Dark Age

2012-? The awakening?

We are still closer to the dark ages than the renaissance age, but moving in the right direction. During the Renaissance I had no doubt that the team was built from the bottom up to win. That was priority #1. I want to believe that is the priority now. And if it is, this team will consistently win 90 or more games a year and compete for a pennant. Personally the wild card game is a play-in game. Technically the playoffs, but come on, be serious.

Not to be too petty, but by definition the Dark Age has to precede the Renaissance. Like history analogies, but...

    • After his Cy Young performance against us, Marsh was very pedestrian in his next 2 starts.  Be nice to take tonight's game with Ragans pitching tomorrow.  2 out of 3 would be a great result.
    • Should win tonight. There’s no way they can get shut down by a pitcher of Marsh’s capabilities twice.
    • WC wanted to give him a contract extension.  Others agreed although I don’t remember who they were.  I think Frobby was open to the discussion??
    • I've seen Stowers "lollygag" a lot this year. I wonder if he's just frustrated being stuck in AAA once again. No matter how everything is presented, these guys have to be upset that they are stuck in AAA when they could be playing in the MLB with other orgs.  Of course the best way to get out of that is to perform, but that's easier said than done. Saying all that, Stowers has always been a streaky hitter. He's white hot or ice cold.
    • Here's John Means statcast info from this last start. Here was his main problem. He couldn't throw many quality strikes and was pulling almost everything glove side. I'm no pitching expert, and I don't know where he was standing on the rubber, but Ben McDonald talks about this all the time where the pitcher needs to make an adjustment on the pitching rubber when he missing to one side too often. Here's his movement since 2019 T The one thing to note is Means' stuff has been pretty average to below average since 2021. He's always relied on changing speeds and location vs incredible stuff. He had no location in this last start but everything else like velocity and movement look similar to the last few years.  So I'm not overly worried about Means. I also don't expect him to be much better than Irvin if and when he comes back, but you never know.
    • Their 55 relief innings are a MLB low ytd as all the starters have done well.    I think they probably want to ride those horses as much as they can as one of my takeaways from the first series was how slow all the relievers throw. Witt's a good MVP rabbit for Gunnar to chase, and he might bring up the question if a Club can still get a Prospect Promotion incentive bonus pick if the player is technically out of pre-Arb by virtue of having signed a LTC. Here are the ERA starting numbers of the lowest-tier of AL SP in strikeout rate: 6-4-8-6-8-1-10-4-7-7-6-7.    Marsh and Lugo have two of the low numbers there. Maikel Garcia has gone ice cold, a bit surprising as he looked All World against us.    They are just now getting perhaps intended starting 2B Michael Massey back from a spring injury (Adam Frazier all singles so far on the season). Burnes-Ragans rematch should have our guy's dander up...we pulled it out against the bullpen but he was outpitched by a lot that night.    Doesn't matter now but it looks like Ragans has never thrown more than about 2200 pitches in a season, in case they end up needing him for more than 26.5 regular season weeks.
    • Well, he didn't know he was going to have a short stint when he was pitching.
