Looks like Beamer is about to announce he is hanging it up at the end of the year. Add another big time program to the list.

That job is nowhere near what it was. Maybe even a notch below Miami.

Barring a surprise, the two SC jobs are the biggest open. Probably nothing else would cause me to leave Memphis or Houston, unless there is a big money difference.

What do you mean "what it was"? The job hasn't really changed, the program has just gotten stale under Beamer. But that happens to the best of them.

VT can throw a decent amount of money around. And Virginia always has a ton of talent, Beamer has just never been much of a recruiter. Or at least not much of a blue chip recruiter. He was always kind of a Gary Williams type.

But if I'm Herman or Fuente, I leave for VT based on money and talent in the state. I'd leave for the Trojans based on talent. Miami based on talent. The Gamecocks based on money and the possibility of talent. The rest I'd make get out a check and keep writing zeros until the pen ran out of ink.

They've fallen off a lot. Before, that job was clearly better than SCe. Now, it's probably the 4th best job available. Get a good recruiter and it can change quickly, but you can't deny they've lost some luster.

But that has nothing to do with the institution itself. The tools are still there. They have fallen off because of Beamer, not because of some change in the football landscape or the structure of the university. FSU went downhill at the end under Bowden. But the "job" hadn't changed. it was still a major university, with a lot of money, with a lot of tradition, in the most talent rich state in America. Your ability to be successful at FSU hadn't changed simply because Bowden had ceased being successful. It was still a premier job. And Jimbo showed that.

VT is a pretty good job. They are going to pay you a decent amount of money. You're going to have a lot of resources available. It's a great college town. And a state that traditionally has a ton of talent. That was the case in 99 when they went to the NC game, and that's the case today.

None of that is disputing what I'm saying. "Get a good recruiter and that can change quickly." But, you HAVE to get a good recruiter now. Kids aren't lining up to go to VT like they were 5 years ago.

I dont' think VT ever had very good recruiting classes. That is what killed Beamer, and why I made my "Gary Williams" comment. Beamer's classes were usually built on blue collar, raw players. Players that needed to redshirt and get in the weight room and really be coached up. Which is why VT, even in Beamer's prime, would almost always lose that January BCS level bowl game. The talent disparity would become apparent.

Saw a Kirby Smart to VT rumor. Probably a really good hire for them.

All indications are that we are going to pursue an offensive minded coach, as our offense has stagnated for years. The idea is that we get an O-minded coach, and we keep Bud Foster on as DC. Bud is the only assistant whose contract extends beyond this season.

So that would probably mean Smart, a defensive coach, is not a leading candidate.

But we'll see. The rumor mill is flying right now. Our athletic director, Whit Babcock, is known for making unexpected flash moves. As Cincinnati AD, he hired Tommy Tuberville, completely unexpectedly. And he got Buzz Williams to coach our basketball team, from Marquette. Both moves came out of the blue, there hadn't been a single rumor floating around about either one until the day they were announced.

So almost anything could happen here. I hear we are willing to go as high as $3.5-$4M/year for a coach... that amount can get almost anybody.

We have a state of the art indoor practice facility that just opened, one of the top 5 in the nation. It's so big you can punt in there. Miami has no indoor facility and it rains every day.

We sell 60,000 seats per game, Miami is lucky to sell 20,000.

We are a 25K student state university with a lot of alums, and while our donation rate isn't up there with the likes of Clemson or the big SEC schools, it is much higher than what the small private school Miami gets from its far smaller alumni base.

I would say VT is still the better job. I agree the two SC jobs are #1 and #1a on the list.

VT is a step down from Miami in terms of being able to win. All those things are nice, but they don't really translate to wins. Sports is still about talent accumulation. And no place in America gives you the opportunity to accumulate talent better than Miami does. There's a reason why Miami, even during this period when it has been as bad and un-athletic as it can get, has handled VT the last two years..

So the requirement will be the next coach HAS to keep Bud Foster?
