Happy 70th Birthday, Jim Palmer

Jim Palmer was viewed for years as cold, aloof, a "know it all", self absorbed and self congratulating.I wish you all could see him with his autistic son Spencer. He is a terrific father and always has been(ask his daughters who are now grown with grown kids of their own).Palmer is not often seen as sentimental(he IS). He is also good hearted, funny, and deeply caring about other human beings. Im glad I know Jim at 70 and I knew him at 25 too. He's grown into a hell of a man.Im proud to call him friend.

I am not old enough to have seen him play. However I can't imagine anyone listening to him call games would come away that. I kinda smile a little when I turn the game on, and find it is he is calling. Conversely, it's funny, but I think Ripken announcing comes across as way less likable than as a player on the field.

I remember opening day they honored him for 50 years in the organization, and my wife thought he was not even 50. Not sure how he stays looking so young.
